I wasn't sure what we were letting ourselves in for - it wasn't Shakespeare but we couldn't go to Stratford and not go to the theatre.

We were not disappointed!

The performance was exactly what you'd expect from the RSC - innovative, engaging and such good watching.

Almost above that though was the theatre itself. My wife and I just couldn't stop grinning from the moment we walked in!

It felt just like walking into the theatre in Shakespeare's day without being just a dull recreation of it. The way the actors utilised the space was great too - we had a number of people pop up behind us or walk past which really drew us in even further to the story.

Be warned though, the seating is 17th century cramped too - not for people with back problems. To be honest though, after about 5 minutes, we completely forgot about it and sat enthralled for 3 hours without even thinking of our backs!

We saw a production of Merry Wives of Windsor, cast included Anita Dobson - the production was fantastic and the facilities at the theatre are excellent

The Swan's design is based on Jacobean theatres, but the RSC use it effectively for a wide variety of shows. We saw a Chinese drama and it was beautiful.

Visited the Swan Theatre to see 'The Orphan of Zhao' recently and it was brilliant! Decided to make a night of it and had dinner at the Rooftop restaurant before the show, which was also fantastic. From beginning to end the whole experience was wonderful. Have decided to split this review into two:
ROOFTOP RESTAURANT
Service was friendly and efficient and although relatively busy, our drinks, orders and food were all taken and received in good time. Our waiter was attentive and reasonably knowledgeable about the food ingredients and preparation. Was even happy to briefly discuss his views on the food and kindly informed us of the 10% voluntary service charge that had already been added to the bill; of course we were more than happy to pay this and more. Food was delicious and we were pleasantly surprised by the excellent presentation and how tasty it all was - and all at a very reasonable price! Puts some other pretentious restaurants to shame.

SWAN THEATRE
We bought the medium priced tickets to see 'The Orphan of Zhao', which was very good. The theatre is wonderfully intimate, which was fantastic for immersing yourself in the play. The actors were all superbly committed with plenty of stand-out performances from a variety of them. It was interesting to see the orchestra/band above the stage instead of in a pit in front of the stage, which carried the sound well. Visually, the play was a treat and I was forever wondering what they would do next. A few key features were the vicious mastiff, the rain, and the death of characters. By the end of the play I had laughed, smiled, cried and sighed and was left wonderfully moved. Could not recommend it enough!
We left, feeling that it was well worth the price of the tickets and the 2hr drive to get there. We were even fortunate enough to bump into one of the principal actors as we left and he kindly spared a few minutes to talk briefly with us.

I love seeing a play at the Swan or the RST in S-u-A. Both theatres are beautiful, and the actors are superb.
