“Clean, quiet & just what it promises”
Reviewed November 12, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

I've stayed here a few times while working in Stratford. As I work away from home a lot, I can't stand hotels and look for alternatives. This was the perfect "home away from home".. clean, comfortable, good amenities and in a quiet, rural location.

Antonia has always provided great information and gets back promptly if I have a query. It was a nice touch that Vanessa came round a couple of times to make sure everything was OK.

There are no negatives that I can think of, and I would not hesitate to come back with family / friends if I was looking for a holiday break in the area.

“Nice property but adverts need correcting to match the reality”
Reviewed October 2, 2014 for a stay in September 2014

This is a lovely cottage, with a traditional feel (including creaky floorboards upstairs!) and both my wife and I generally enjoyed our stay – though please be aware some things were not as advertised or promised. Read on to find out if they are a deal breaker for you or not – one of them would have been for me if I’d known at the time of booking.

1. The Good Points

i. Good communications before arrival with lots of relevant information sent by email.
ii. Nice quiet location without any inappropriate intrusion
iii. Lovely cottage overall, which accept for the issue with the internet (see below) we would happily consider again.
iv. A good supply of tea, coffee, sugar, UHT milk and a packet of biscuits , as well as 2 toilet rolls were provided.
v. Friendly cat (who if you’re not careful will dart into the cottage – it happened to us)!

2. Things that didn’t match the advertisement

WIFI – they lost one star over this as it advertised as having it (without any problems noted) and it was a key requisite for us when we were looking for a place. The link to the router was at best very weak and most of the time non-existent. The best reception was found outside the property; though not ideal if it’s cool, dark and/or raining. They are aware of an issue with the internet as we were told so in the email we received a few days before arriving which said the “system runs via satellite and can sometimes be a little temperamental!” This is different from the WIFI connection which could be improved by the use of WIFI boosters which aren’t too expensive. Until they do that, I would look to book elsewhere if a reasonable internet connection is needed.

The other star was lost over a combination of other issues; some for advertising things that weren’t the reality and some for issues with the property condition. These included:

i. No DVD player (as advertised).
ii. The safe isn’t working (they knew of this).
iii There wasn’t a small dining table with 4/5 chairs, rather (squashed into the dining area) was 2 large 2.5’ x 6’ (75cm x180cm) with 10 chairs around it. Only 3 were practically useable if you didn’t want it to further overwhelm the open plan ground floor area. Apparently it is like that because previous large groups had asked for it, but it isn’t really practical for a family of say four.
iv. There was no electric black log burning stove in the living room area. When requested, they did provide a petite oil filled radiator and advise us of the wall mounted radiator in the dining area – though this was obscured and difficult to access due to the oversized dining tables.
v. There is only one side table and no lamp in the living room area.
vi. PayPal, though advertised, wasn’t an accepted form of payment when I booked and paid in full.

Things of concern or disappointment

i. The fixing for the small plasma TV was only held in by 2 bolts for which the rawl plugs were pulling away from the wall (the others 2 bolts were hanging in the bracket and doing nothing). I did report it, but only received a call after we’d vacated the cottage to say the maintenance person was coming that day. I hope it’s fixed now as it could easily fall at anytime.
ii. The kitchen had so much in it (in the cupboards, the drawers and the surfaces), which generally would be a plus point; however, there was little space to store groceries. I would have preferred less equipment etc to allow for some reasonable storage.
iii. The bathroom has some issues. The photo included doesn’t clearly show that the ceiling slopes up from about 30” (75cm) above the non-tap end of the bath. This with the shower screen it is difficult to get in and out of the bath safely – particularly if you are tall. I’m 6’ (180cm) and could only stand up right by the shower – otherwise you’ll have to crouch (far from ideal if you mobility problems. Also if you are over about 5’8” (170cm), and a man,) you will not be able to stand up straight at the toilet. The shower screen needs the gaps sorting out (water escapes easily onto the floor. Finally, the ceramic floor tiling could do with some repair – which I expect may be down to the creaking floorboards (perhaps ceramic floor tiles aren’t the ideal choice for this bathroom – particularly these ones which are very slippery when wet).
iv. I’m glad we didn’t need to use the downstairs sofa bed, as unless you like waking at the crack of dawn (or soon after) you find light streaming in through the upper half of stable door (as there is no curtain, blind or anything else).
v. The bin in the kitchen was broken with a piece of non-functioning metal sticking out where the pedal should be and the inner liner was cracked from top to bottom. It needs replacing.

In saying all that, if they sorted out the WIFI, I would consider this place again. It’s in a great location, Antonia is readily available and the cottage was an ideal size for us.

“Excellent customer service”
Reviewed July 3, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We are staying in Hamlet Cottage this month thanks to Antonia. There was a mix up in the paperwork, but Antonia saved the day! I will update after our visit but wanted to write a review now expressing what a pleasure it was to work with this company. She literally saved our family vacation.

“Beautiful country getaway”
Reviewed September 18, 2013 for a stay in June 2013

My family and I flew from Western Australia for a family wedding in Birmingham. We didn't want to stay with relatives as there was six of us including two small kids. We found Shakespeare holiday cottages online, and it sounded perfect as a base for us to come and go as we wished. Set off a country road in a rural setting, Hamlet cottage was one amongst several in the group. Even though we had 'neighbours', we never heard them, and the cottage itself was perfect for our needs. Half way through our stay, we had an angel of a cleaning lady come and give the place a whizz through and changed sheets and towels, which was lovely to come back to. We were given lots of useful info and directions about the area, and direct routes to get to the cottages, as they are not easily visible without them! The local taxi man was also recommended to us and he was a star!! I would recommend Shakespeare cottages very highly as it is perfect from a weekend getaway or much longer stays (three weeks in our case!). There are different cottages to house different group sizes, just choose the one that fits your group best! We were very happy while we were there and we will definitely use Shakespeare cottages again next time we come to the UK, and I give them a big double thumbs-up for the care and attention we received. Fantastic holiday cottages ran by a fantastic team!!!! :)

“Hamlet cottage - excellent clean, well equipped holiday home”
Reviewed September 15, 2013 for a stay in September 2013

Just returned from a weekend staying at the cottage. The cottage was very clean, very well equippped and location wise it was ideal for those wishing to visit Stratford - as it's only a few miles from the city centre. The letting company Shakespeare holidays , especially Antonia, provided a very professional service with excellent e mail/ text/phone communication . Although the cottage is adjoined on either side we were not disturbed by noise through the walls at all. Infact, we shared drinks on Sat eve and enjoyed getting to know all our neighbours ! We would definitely consider a return visit
