Owner description: Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds. In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

You get about a minute's ride for 50p !
However, that's because the Avon's only about 15m wide where the ferry crosses.
It runs from near the bowling green to the church side of the theatre and is a nice way of crossing the river for a 50m or so walk to Holy Trinity Church or to the RSC.
It's different and well worth the money !

The chain ferry is a nice shortcut for crossing the Avon when out and about with the dog playing in the parks across the river from town. The operator is always friendly and chatty.

Be taken across the river by hand. The ferryman winds the handle to take you across at a human pace. Truely remarable value at 50 p.

An experience - the first time I've been on a chain ferry. The crew (of one, captain, below-decks and purser) had to work hard on a very warm day, as the ferry seemed virtually full all the time. A very pleasant two-minute crossing of the River Avon - and very good value at only 50p each.
