Owner description: This fifteenth-century, charming thatched cottage was the childhood home of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's sweet-heart and wife.Experienced guides explain the stories behind the Shakespeare connection and the history of some well-known English idioms such as "chairman of the board".There are nine acres of gardens and grounds to explore including a lavender maze, a woodland walk, the Shakespeare arboretum and a living willow cabin where you may listen to some of Shakespeare's sonnets.

We visited on a gloomy winters day, but the cottage and grounds were beautiful nonetheless. Fascinating historical insight given by the guides, particularly David who was brilliant!! The woodland walk, the maze, the tree collection and the beautiful sculptures were all great. Will try and return in better weather to see the cottage garden flowers in bloom. Heartily recommended.

Thank Rachel B

As part of a combination ticket with other attractions in and around Stratford, this is one of the two highlights (the other being the Mary Arden House). Beyond the house, extensive grounds here are worth the time and exercise. One garden includes a number of commissioned sculptures related to a number of Shakespeare plays (and one is an unusual "relief map" (if that's the right term) of Great Britain; it has to be seen to be appreciated--as do those that represent Lear, Romeo and Juliet, and Falstaff (and I'm sure I've forgotten two or three others).

The docents in the cottage are quite knowledgeable about its history, though I felt that the males were more engaged (and engaging) than the females. This impression may be the result of interaction with both a male and a female guide before entering the cottage for the "tour."

an amazing building which has been carefully maintained to give you a real sense of what life must have been like in shakespeares day and the trials and tribulations that people had to live with. Easily walkable from the town centre and there is a very good gift shop, sculpture gardens, woodland walk and tea shop.

A rather expensive way to spend less than 30 minutes. The history of the house was well presented in a short talk but the crux of the matter is that so little is known about the family. Anne was left to look after the family for a short while at the age of 8 until her father married again about a year after her mother's death. After this little is known about her until she married William. The house has 2 rooms which were used at the time Anne lived ther and these are quite interesting; the rest of the house was added later by descendants of the family. uneven floors and difficult stairs make this unsuitable for those with walking difficulties.
Car parking is reasonably priced at £1.00 for 3 hours, but there is little to do in the vicinity in autumn - maybe more in summer.
