“Lovely historic newly decorated main building”
Reviewed October 4, 2013 via mobile

Stayed just for one night on last minute stop in Stratford, walked in off the street to ask availability, lovely entrance into historic main building, staff very welcoming, had double room in separate hotel annex. This was in need of a refurbishment , threadbare stair carpets and dated decor but the actual room was much better, the main hotel building was lovely and all newly refurbished, bar & breakfast service for drinks very slow but actual food was lovely.
Superb location in the heart of Stratford with some lovely restaurants all around. Car park at the hotel was very full but fine for our tiny car.
Our room was large, large new bathroom, flat screen tv, quality fabrics but the bed sheet had a hole if I were to be picky, huge bed, tea making facilities could have done with bottle of still water.
Room was quiet and once they have refurbished the annex building, I think it will all be superb.
We didn't have milk for our tea at breakfast, took a while to get someone to ask for some, when they did they got a used jug off an uncleared table, a bit off putting! Also no marmalade and a 15 min wait for tea in the bar!
Some fine tuning and this would be a really brilliant hotel, would stay here again.

We stayed here with family from overseas and first impressions were very good. It has olde worlde charm and must be beautiful when the open fires are lit.
The location really could not be better, everything is in walking distance.
Our rooms were more than adequate having been upgraded to suites our rooms were very spacious with a massive bed in one room. Breakfast was nice enough for a buffet but is always nicer when breakfast is cooked to order but understand this can sometimes be impossible.
Would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again if in the area.

A really nice, old-world hotel ideally place in the centre of Stratford, but which seems to rely very much on it’s ‘old-world charm’ rather than customer service since a few things were rather disappointing. Firstly, due to the toilets by the bar / reception area being refurbished we had to use the ones through the restaurant unless we wanted to return to our room, which was some distance away. This wouldn’t have been a problem if the lights hadn’t been turned off in one of the areas I had to walk through to get to the gents, and if there had been any warning in the every dim light of the step I fell down on the way there!.
We opted for a ‘Privilege’ room when we booked, which had a four poster bed. I regularly stay in Mercure hotels when travelling on business and am used to the comfort of their beds, so both my partner and myself were quite surprised at just how hard and uncomfortable the mattress on the four-poster bed turned out to be. I would equate it to the firmness of the mattresses usually provided on beds in Greece. This is probably fine if you like a really firm mattress, but unfortunately it meant that as we both prefer something softer, neither of us enjoyed a particularly good night’s rest.
At breakfast, after being seated and then waiting for a while, we eventually had to go and find someone to place an order with for some poached eggs as there certainly seemed to be a lack of hotel staff presence in the breakfast room.
Another, smaller ‘gripe’ was that whilst complimentary soft drinks were provided in the room rate, all except the bottled water were in crown-top bottles, and there was no bottle opener provided in the room.
On check-out when I presented some A-Club vouchers I was informed by the lady on reception that she could not access the required website to validate them and asked me if I could pay by credit card instead. I was not very happy with this since, once printed out, the vouchers have a time-limit within which to be used After pondering some options she suggested that she would keep the vouchers and add any additional charges to the credit card I had pre-authorised on arrival.
The only reason we stayed at the Mercure was that I could use some of the A-Club points I had accrued to pay for most of our stay. However, in light of our disappointments I’m not sure that we would opt to stay at the Mercure in Stratford again as there is a number of other very nice hotels to choose from in the area.

As a recent member of the RSC we now make frequent trips to Stratford to see the miraculous Shakespeare productions at the Waterside. The Mercure is just a stone's throw away and it has always added to our enjoyment of the plays knowing that we are staying somewhere where we can park the car and relax before and after the production. The rooms are always clean and tidy and the staff extremely helpful and polite.

Having dined a few doors away at the excellent Sorrento's we met at the hotel for drinks with a couple of friends. I am a regular in Stratford where my sister lives and I have stayed with some success at the Shakespeare in the past. But the drink in the bar left a sour taste in the mouth. Purely selfish and personal I asked for a good dark rum( as is my wont) and waited for a long time for the young man to return with one bottle of spiced rum, not my cup of tea at all. No problem, what desert wines do you have by the glass? None. Manager please! Sorry, we normally stock three rums( big deal) but are waiting for more to arrive. Desert wine? Sorry , we don't have any available. Finally settled for rum but when the bill arrived I was somewhat surprised at the price for what had been an average drink. When i questioned the young man it transpired I had been charged for a double!
Impressed? Not at all! With the competition I would have thought they could have tried a little harder.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review. Ou Food & Beverage Manager James apologised and agreed with yourself that we should have the dark rum in stock and offered the round of drinks as a gesture of his goodwill.

I am surprised to see that your review is a little harsh as the round of drinks offered by James with the Remy Martin XO came to £ 30.10.

We do not have a large demand for dark rum and therefore an oversight was made during the recent ordering. We will pay more attention when we do our weekly beverage order.

I hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Kind regards,

I love Stratford Upon Avon and regularly stay there as I have a interest in theatre. The RSC. The only place to stay is the Mercure. It is so lovely and comfortable and the location is so convenient for the theatre. takes 3 minutes to walk there. Even if you are not going to the theatre, it is so good for the town. All the tourist attractions are easily reached on foot. The service is also very good. all staff are very helpful. They have a good car park at the rear which is always an advantage. It costs £10 a day but well worth it. Just in case they are busy, book a space in advance. Breakfast very good

We stayed for 3 nights in this lovely hotel earlier this month. Our room was extremely comfortable and quaint. Breakfast was excellent as was the service we received. Staff were friendly and helpful. The location, in the centre of Stratford Upon Avon could not have been better, within easy walking distance of all attractions. The only possible problem is parking as you can't be sure there will be a space when you arrived. Having said that we always managed to get a park.
