“Could be better”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

We visited this hotel a couple of years ago for coffee and thought it was lovely. Although we did not eat there we looked at the menu which looked really exciting so when we were looking for somewhere special to go for our 30th wedding anniversary we booked a 2 night stay. Sadly it was a disappointment. It has the feeling of a hotel which is struggling in the current climate. This was evidenced in the lack of clientele in the restaurant; only three tables were occupied on both Saturday and Sunday night. I think the menu was uninspiring and maybe could be improved. I asked for a bottle of water with my meal but apparently they did not have any bottled water at all (which should have been included in the room as we had booked a suite but was not provided). The suite was more of a family room and a little run down. In the bar they had a cocktail menu but on Sunday night we were informed that there was no qualified staff to make them. On the plus side the staff were friendly and professional and the log fires really welcoming. With some small improvements I believe this hotel could be a great place to stay.

Pleasant stay in Stratford and if you book in advance not a bad price. Be warned there is a hefty car park charge so be prepared (or try to negotiate it's included when checking in). Quaint bedroom with loads of character.

Room Tip: Car parking charges are annoying in a hotel you have to drive to.

Dear Guests,

Thank you very much for your kind review here on the Tripadvisor website. We do charge £ 10 for an overnight stay for all residents, which is a good deal compared to the normal charge of £ 12 overnight for the NCP car park. We have organised a deal with the NCP at Rother Street and that is a overnight charge of £ 5 (with a voucher from our reception).

I look forward to welcome you back.

This hotel is excellently located and the buidling is fantastic (from the front and when the scaffolding is down) but becuase they are blessed with the location and building there is an air of complacency. Owned by Accor and therefore having the corporate feel you get the impression that the staff are there just to finish their shift. The room we had was tiny and ill equipped. It's hard not to enjoy Stratford, which we did, and you won't find a better located hotel but you will find much better service and standards. Pull your socks up Accor.

Location: Right in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon. Lots of road noise in front and from the parking lot behind the hotel.

Room: Requested a junior suite with a king-sized bed, in a quiet part of the building. The window in the bathroom would not shut, so all the noise from the parking lot came in through that window. Evidently people in Stratford-upon-Avon party very late and get up very early. Heard workers and delivery personnel coming to work quite early. Floor creaked; we felt sorry for whomever was below us. Bed was 2 twin beds shoved together. Very uncomfortable and the sheets did not fit properly. Bed spread was dirty, so we folded it and placed it on the floor. Room had not been vacuumed properly. Mold in caulking in the bathroom; since the window would not shut, all the outside moisture came into the room. Shower uncomfortable and narrow, with the shower head placed at a weird angle.

Food: Did not eat here. Went to a coffee shop a block over.

Service: Card reader would not work when we checked in late at night. Clerk debated on whether to allow us to stay or not. Since the room was pre-paid and it was late and the manager was not available, we were allowed to stay. Mentioned that issue to clerk in the morning at check-out and mentioned window that would not shut and the lack of housekeeping attention to the room; clerk shrugged. She did store our luggage for us until we left later in the day.

Waited in lobby to meet a friend. Lobby had free wi-fi, but was very dark and unsuited for reading of any print material.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the parking lot.

It was a 4 star hotel allegedly....but it is no better than 3 star. It is an unmanaged hotel...we arrived at 5.45 and were given keys to room 204 - it was disgusting...poor decoration and stuffy, an appaling design just craming in the bare essentials. It had not been recently decorated and was showing signs of wear as was the corridor approaching it and there was evidence of the door having been broken into as the doorframe around the lock was disfigured. I complained - this was a special treat away for my partners birthday - the hotel knew this. There was no porter and the lift tiny and with luggage and reluctant and multiple fire doors all the way to the room it was a very bad start. The receptionist got the message and was polite and helpful and came up with keys to room 310 which was very different. However even there despite the decor being ok the lack of drawer storage for clothes etc was beyond an oversight - it is incompetent. The whole place was like a morgue - hardly anyone around and no sign of the place being mananged or that service was in any way a priority. The waitress at dinner was nevertheless delightful and very pleasant but she was the only element of welcome we received. No-one else made us feel remotely valued let alone special. I consider that service is at the heart of hotel life, without it you may as well rent a cottage/apartment. Mercure clearly do not have any rigour here and understaff this hotel to make a profit. The truth is that it trades on its position and name in this very special tourist resort and the management have become complacent in this respect. It is too easy to look as though they are successful because it is Stratford. But the hotel and its facilities do the brand an injustice and will not encourage return or cross selling opportunities. What a shame.

We have stayed at the Shakespeare Hotel many times over a period of around thirty years
In the last two years we have made three visits the last one being Jan 2013 and on each occasion noticed that a subtle decline was taking place.
On this last occasion we dined at 8.30pm on the evening of arrival, the 28th January and we were the only people present in the room, Othello’s Brasserie was closed (due we were told to the fact that the floor was being varnished) so we ate in the breakfast room. The meal was well cooked and presented.
That evening we pointed out to the Reception Staff that there was no bottled water available in our rooms (as there had been on previous occasions) and the Manager on duty offered to sell us a medium sized bottle for £5.00. We eventually managed to persuade him to let us have a very small bottle free of charge.
The first morning breakfast was cooked to order and generously portioned and we arrived in the restaurant at 9.10am
The second morning the breakfast was a hot buffet and arriving again around 9.10am we found that for four people there were three dried up fried eggs, one spoonful of congealed baked beans, two cooked tomatoes – nobody offered to bring further supplies from the kitchen and we were told that table service finished at 9.30am again the toast which we ordered arrived burnt.

We asked to speak to the Manager and a young woman who was acting Manager came to speak to us in the Reception area. She listened to the complaint about breakfast and did deduct the cost of breakfast for that day from the final bill but did not make any reassuring acknowledgement of our complaints.
Sadly although the Shakespeare is situated very conveniently for the Theatre and shops it is no longer a busy venue for visitors there are only two open fires in use and the wonderful hospitality and ambience for which it was famous no longer exists.

We had 2 nights here on a DBB deal in November. The hotel is centrally situated in Stratford-Upon-Avon, with immediate access to shops, restaurants and tourist attractions. Downstairs, several log fires add to the building's charm, yet with a modernised and stylish restaurant. Food was excellent, both at dinner and at breakfast. The room was less impressive: small, with a heavy armchair blocking the wardrobe due to lack of floor space. The car park is quite small and the access quite difficult to find. We parked the car for the duration of our stay, but have doubts we could always have found a place had we gone for a drive. The age and position of the building, however, excuses these failings. All in all, though, I can recommend it as an appropriate and interesting base for visiting the Shakespeare attractions. One reservation remains: I have real difficulty with hotels charging for parking - akin to charging extra for a shower, for example. I'd rather see the £10 added to the bill upfront for transparency.
