The Alveston Manor is a lovely hotel, in walking distance of the town centre and all the theatres. The rooms are a little under whelming, nothing wrong with them but I would expect a little more for my money. We didnt eat at the hotel, we prefer to try local restaurants but breakfast the next day was good with a good selection of food and friendly staff.

My husband and I stayed at Alveston Manor for our anniversary last weekend and had a really lovely time. We arrived on Friday afternoon and the very helpful receptionist went out of her way to make it possible for us to check into our room straight away, even though we were early arriving. We were offered tea in the lounge while we waited. The lounge was warm and welcoming, this was a great start to our weekend! Our bedroom in the Manor House was everything we had hoped it would be. It was traditional in stlye with beautiful exposed beams and creaky floor boards yet offered everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. We walked into Stratford in the afternoon. It's a few years since we have been to Stratford and the town is looking better that ever. Bancroft Gardens has been updated and does wonders for the town, i can imagine this would look beautiful in the summer!! We visited the RSC, did lots of shopping and booked our tickets at Shakespeare Birthplace to visit the 5 houses the following day. There is so much to fit in!! The hotel in perfectly located and within 5 minutes we were back in the warmth of the hotel lounge. All staff were so polite and friendly, they remembered us from when we checked in and asked about our day. Service on such a personal level is so hard to come by these days! Dinner that evening was excellent and offered a wide selection of choice. The restaurant service was fantastic and the staff we spoke to could confidently advise us on wine and food choices. There is a really homely feel to the hotel in the evening. My husband went into the gym on Saturday morning and I used the swimming pool. The Health Club, although busy, was very clean and for me, it was great to be able to have a proper swim in the large swimming pool rather than the small pools you find in most hotels. Breakfast is served until 11am at the weekend and this flexibility worked really well for us. The high service standards and friendliess continued. Breakfast had obviously been very busy earlier on, but the continental breakfast was fully refreshed and the hot plated buffet really se us up for the day! All in all a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. We left feeling relaxed and refreshed and would definitely return. If visiting Stratford, i would highly reccomend this hotel!

Room Tip: Our room was in The Manor House, room 14

We booked this for a romantic night away in mid-January, paying 150 pounds for dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is in a fantastic location, in the heart of the town. Unfortunately the hotel itself was tired, in need of a refit. The carpets were threadbare in places, chipped paint, everything very rough around the edges. The bed and bathroom were clean, if strangely furnished (mismatching). The shower was very hot and the temperature could not be turned down despite our best efforts.

The restaurant was probably the biggest disappointment. The quality of the food at dinner showed some promise (excellent steak for main) but the atmosphere was unpleasant, it was dark and dingy, badly decorated and not at all relaxing. Unfortunately there was also a very bad smell in all areas of the dining room. (This was present at breakfast as well, sadly). The breakfast itself was very dry and didn't seem at all fresh.

We did raise our issues when we checked out and were only offered the explanation that the carpets in the restaurant are due to be cleaned. We just feel overall so disappointed, and it certainly wasn't a relaxing night away. Although the staff were very helpful, we won't be going back, and are put off visiting any other Macdonald hotels.

Room Tip: Try and avoid the 'newer' rooms, if at all possible stay in the main 'older' buildin...

We tried on 3 occasions online via the website to enquire about a number of spa treatments. It took over 16 days to get back to us regarding the first attempt of enquiry. This spa obviously does not value it's potential customers.

We stayed here for one night as part of a large group on Saturday 12th Jan- upon arriving at the hotel you are wowed by the architecture and dominance of the building, however this is short lived when you realise the rest of the hotel, that can't be seen fro the road, is not like this.
We were in a room in the Warwick Wing- walking to the rooms from the reception area we soon realised that the hotel was in a poor, tired condition and desperately needs improving.
The room itself felt very dated and not very clean- around the edges of the carpets you could see the dust build up, and the dresser was dusty and marked. The bathroom was awful- mould around the edges and a dirty mark on the woodwork where the basin sat. Also, no full length mirror, although I would have settled for sanitary on this occassion.
Thankfully we were not in our room for long- had we been I would have asked to change rooms- although I am not sure we would have got much better, as the whole place seemed to be in a sad state of repair.
That said, the reception and bar area are lovely, and the bed was big with crisp clean white sheets.

I will not be returning to this hotel.
