“Disappointment with mediocre food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

Been to The Cross several years ago when going through Kenilworth. As we were passing through Kenilworth this evening we thought we would try the Cross again as we were on that side of town. Decided to revist rather than going to The elephant and Castle or Harrington's. Lets deal with the positives - house wine excellent, starter delicious and good flavours and staff alpha +++ - from there onwards it goes down hill!. Rib eye steak - no flavour and not recognised as rib eye cut. We indicated that we were not happy with steak Informed that it must have been bad batch of meat from butcher (* tip to the Cross - change your butcher as it was not rib eye as we know it! ) :Desert - Baked Alaska - no meringue and uncooked egg whites. When discussed with staff informed that it was the chief's interpretation of 'Baked Alaska'. really who is paying the bill the customer or the chief! ( tip to the chief - give the customer what he asked for!)
After our mention of our disappointment with the 'Rib eye' and 'Baked 'Alaska' food there was no offer to deducted the food off the bill, which we thought and understood was mandatory in the UK! We eat out in Warwickshire 3 / 4 a week. Frankly we are 'cheesed off' paying top prices for mediocre and inferior quality food. Apparently there must be a lot of chief's who's egos exceed their culinary abilities and must be waling a tight rope! We are going through a recession and a lot of restaurants must 'up their game' to survive. Very Very disappointed with our experience this evening.

“One of the best in Kenilworth”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013

Fantastic food and such an appealing menu that it would be easy to go back a few times and order different dishes. The service was a tiny bit slow but we were in no rush and the complimentary palate cleanser and excellent food more than made up for it.

“Fab Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2013

This was our 3rd visit in the last 6 months. We had a lovely meal of Lamb Koftas, Lamb Rump, Risotto balls and Pizza. All the food was very well presented and tasty.
The service was generally good, the only stange thing is when the waitor bought the credit card machine to us he asked if we would like to tip on the credit card or in cash!
We said probably cash, he said that was better as it split better! I dont think he meant it to sound as bad as it did, maybe it was his first night!

“Good food, service needs some polish”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

We, a party of five and regular diners at The Cross arrived on 13th May for a celebratory dinner. We had not seen each other in a while so lots of catching-up and reminiscing. We all had a drink at the bar first. Starters included scallops, soup and cheese panacotta, all lovely, for mains, fish and chips was the favourite (and in my experience never fails to deliver) steak and linguine, all really good. The only small observation was that the service whilst mostly good needed some polish. At one point my friend said, "I'm fed up with the constant interruptions" from the waiting staff, I agreed. During the meal we were interrupted several times mid-conversation, there was no attempt to be patient and choose the right moment, catch some-one's eye or make a gentle apology before being given the go-ahead for the intrusion; it appeared all about the process, this was frustrating mid funny story or pouncing before a punch-line. (good service should be unobtrusive). I brought this to the attention of the restaurant manager as an observation for some tweaking, service should be customer focussed nothing more. The staff were hospitable at the end of the night when we were delayed due to late arrival of taxi and we were not rushed or made to feel that we were holding them up. I like the Cross for a drink at the bar and for dining, it is always appealing.

“Fab Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

Just had a great meal . Pretty much faultless , great service right throughout the meal and spot on cuisine . The scallops were perfectly cooked with a great light touch of curry and the cauliflower was just right . Whitebait amuse bouche was a welcome blast from the past . The turbot with risotto was rich and perfectly cooked . Pork three ways was deemed delicious as was the lamb . Star of the show was the chocolate tart with an ingenious cumin caramel . Can't wait to go back . Felicitations to the chef and crew .
