Chesford Grange - A QHotel

Reviewed April 20, 2014

Just back from a 2 night Easter stay, we only had a standard room but it was fine, big enough and spotless. We had lunch in the bar then sat outside in the sun. I had read poor reviews of the Asian barman but he was wonderful, very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Evening meal was ok (starter amazing, main just ok)and service was very good. Breakfast was what I expect of a 4* hotel, choice of hot breakfast plus choice of yogurts and fruits and cereals and toast and pastries so something for everybody. Only downside was the layout of breakfast, it was very busy and the hot breakfast is split into two sections so people were queueing in the wrong place and blocking those who only wanted juice or fruit, i also think the waiting staff should be clear in an evening that when they ask if you want some water with your meal that it is going to cost you £4 unless you ask for tap water. The bed was very comfortable so had two great nights sleep. We will definitely be back again sometime.

We took advantage of Q Hotels’ winter Breakaway Club deal to stay 2 nights DB&B with a half price Q-star room upgrade. We think that all of the Q-star rooms are on the top floor of a new extension block built just a few years ago. They seem to be much bigger than other rooms and the modern (unusual) décor feels really light and airy. The king size bed was very comfortable but like so many hotels, why do they have to use duvets with such a high tog rating? In our opinion Q Hotels bathrobes are much better than the majority of robes you get in other chains. The wall mounted LCD TV opposite the bed had an OK but not sparkling picture, but well done Q Hotels for trialling full Sky TV, (albeit non HD), instead of the terrible hotel TV systems with overcomplicated menus and (for most) pointless pay TV channels. The bathroom was pretty small, which was somewhat disappointing, but at least it was bright and clean – and it would have been nice if they’d installed a more modern over bath shower system with a glass shower screen instead of the white plastic shower curtain, after all these are upgraded rooms.

Dinner was excellent both nights and service spot on. But breakfast’s a bit of a shambles. There’s little organisation and they obviously don’t pay for enough staff in the mornings. You have to wait to be shown to your table but then more often than not it seems you’re on your own. You’ll be lucky if anyone asks you if you want tea or coffee and then you could be ages trying to get hold of a server to ask for some. It’s simple. Employ more breakfast staff. Ensure the staff member who seats guests calls over a server immediately. Cups turned upside down means tea and coffee orders haven’t been taken – then turned right way up when they have been. And there’s obviously not enough staff in the kitchen as buffet items, both hot or cold, can remain empty for long periods. A senior chef should always be on to take ownership of the buffet and see that items are replenished as they are getting close to empty, not a long time after. But the buffet food itself was fine.

We didn’t use the spa so can’t comment on that. In spite of the breakfast service, we’d be very happy to stay here again, in an upgraded room.

Room Tip: Q Star rooms are bigger

Dear MandH-eurotrippers

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts on your stay with us, I am very sorry you had a poor breakfast experience and your comments have been shared with the Restaurant Manager. As you can see from the majority of feedback on TA we do generally get good feedback regarding breakfast and we will use them to maintain our standards for the future.

I am pleased all other aspects of your stay were enjoyable and this has not deterred you from returning in the future.

I have no complaints on the rooms, room was ok, reception was oblivious to anyone walking past there was no sign of life from them, did not get welcomed only on arrival, there was zero conversion, Breakfast... Well were do I start, was pointed to a table and not taken to it, was a hassle to even speak to anyone working! was literally outrageous stuff would feel more welcomed in MCDS! The food is 15pound a person! and was covered in grease and oil, food is cheap and horrid, has to deep fried as, This is a review on two nights so not a one off!

Dear Rimmo89

It is disappointing to see that your stay was not to your satisfaction and that you didn't have the experience similar to other guests who really love the breakfast buffet. I do hope that you spoke to the Duty Manager while you were at the hotel who would have gladly assisted with any issued that you had.

Between Kenilworth and Warwick allows going to either town for a meal, shopping, or walking. Warwick Castle is a site we visited and enjoyed. Room was clean and like new. Elevator to all floors. Everything worked well. Hair dryer need something to hang on but it was most useful for my wife. Coffee and tea making facilities were good and milk was kept cold in refrigerator. Double bed was comfortable with comforter. View out of window was of park like land. Pool was great and spa prices reasonable. Breakfast most abundant, hot plates, and freshly supplied.

Room Tip: Do not face road for better view. All rooms seemed equally quiet.

This is a really lovely hotel with pleasant, very courteous staff. Rooms and cuisine are of the highest standard with prices that are most competitive. Some nice countryside and views during the journey. Will definitely revisit.

Booked with secret escapes and to be honest this one is well below standards of many other 4* hotels we have stated at.

Staff were very good always polite and helpful particularly Bhuna at the bar on the second night.

Not a good experience with bar food as it took 50 minutes for a Panini & Sandwich and when arrived they were not as ordered.

Bedroom, 359, was very tired. Oak laminate flooring and desk module was chipped, worn and just not very nice, bathroom though was new and nicely done.

The biggest let down is the restaurant. Tables and seating very old and really do need replacing. The seating is badly stained/ damaged and badly worn. This wasn't so bad at breakfast but at dinner it is not what you should expect from a 4* hotel. Some linen on the tables and losing the paper napkins would help.
Looks like this chain has got it's money's worth out of the hotel and needs to be a bit more clever in updating.

The hotel is set up for conferences / meetings really and the little touches for others are missing.

Real shame as it looked much nicer on the web and most reviews were good, we wouldn't go back but may suit others who haven't been spoilt in much better quality 4*s at similar prices

Room Tip: Rooms in the new block, we had 359, need updating
