My daughter took us here when we visited her at uni. The mix of diners is good, not too studenty ! We had mussels to start with and it was huge, as big as some main courses, they were succulent and tasty. Then we had fillet steak, these too are huge and very tender. The sauce that you order is all over the steak and covers the plate, so if you just want a bit ask for it on the side. The salad was plain and not very inspiring and the veg was an assortment of broccoli potato and carrots. The side dishes are huge and easily shared. I would definitely come back, even though you can't book, the queue does go down quickly and the bill is very reasonable, where else can you get fillet steak and a side dish for £14.50 and a litre of okay wine for £11 ?

I visit Francescas frequently with friends living only a short walk its difficult to keep away! The food is tasty, staff are more than happy to help. Mussels are great if you fancy them to start or for your main and are priced very reasonably. Francesca serves up a variety of tasty Italian dishes in a cosy environment. Francescas is always packed out everytime we walk past; surely this says something!!

I used to go here very frequently when my children were small, and now they are adults they still love to go. You can't book, but once you get a table there is no feeling of being hurried. The tables are close together and it can be noisy - the waiters are loud and cheery and they love children. I have lots of very happy memories of many family birthday meals here, and more recently, dinner for two. Good food and good value.

Visited Francesca's a lot as a student in Newcastle as it is such good value for money & the food is really tasty. It's nothing special or fancy - just hearty Italian food. Love the mixed deep fried seafood starter which you have to share as its so big, and usually go for 1/2 pizza 1/2 pasta main (salmon pasta is really nice). Never tried anything from the meat and fish menu but again amazing value. Lovely ambiance and décor is typical Italian bistro. Queuing is a little annoying especially on a weekend but normally doesn't take too long. House wine is alright too...again just too cheap to complain! Service fast & friendly. Wouldn't recommend for very special occasions as it perhaps hasn't for the right feel, but definitely for a meal out with friends.

The parking's not easy, you can't book a table, and you usually have to queue (though not outside any more!). That said, we've been coming here 2 or 3 times a year for 20-25 years so it must have something going for it.

First of all the food. It's maybe not haute cuisine but there is a wide choice and it's invariably good and tasty. We usually have pizza but the pasta selection is good too. You don't need to go past the house wine which, unusually, comes in half and 1 litre bottles; it's cheap and it's excellent.

Many of the staff seem to have been there a long time, they're laid back but efficient and friendly - you rarely seem to have to wait long for your order. The place has a great ambience; tables are close together with what often seems a bizarre cross section of customers but everyone is happily chatting away. As you'd expect from an Italian reataurant, they're very child tolerant. There is never any pressure or sales pitch from the staff, nobody hassles you to finish your drinks/coffee.

The best surprise is the bill, I always expect it to be more than it is. Not too many places where you can say that!

Long may it thrive.
