Description: Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle is Britains oldest purpose-built restaurant, dating back to 1239 when it was used as a refectory by hungry monks. Luckily the food is a bit more modern, and the award-winning menu and historical surrounds have made this one of Newcastles most popular restaurants. Whether youre dining in the candlelit medieval banquet hall, the intimate dining room or the garden terrace, be sure to arrive early for a delicious cocktail at the bar. The menu never fails to impress, and favourite dishes include the wild rabbit stew with prunes, roasted almonds and Jerusalem pure and grilled scallops with roast pumpkin, French beans and beetroot coulis. Blackfriars Restaurant has an acclaimed wine list.

“Good food. interesting building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2014 via mobile

My daughter and I visited Blackfriars for Saturday lunch. The food was good and the building fascinating. It was challenging to find if you are not a local because google maps sent us elsewhere! However we rang the restaurant for directions and the staff were extremely helpful.

“Early evening fantastic value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 24, 2014

Visited prior to an event at the Tyne Theatre. Dined from the early evening menu. Fantastic value for money. Food was very very good. The Shields potted crab had been snapped up (gutted) but the waiter recommended the Black pudding starter which was fabulous (as a black pudding aficionado it was the best I have ever had and my husband agreed). Lovely steak and chips followed by the sticky toffee pudding with almond ice cream. Couldn't finish the chips or the pud as portions were bigger than expected. Husband had the lambs liver, again larger than anticipated portion but he managed the lemon posset. Choice of local beer and ale was extensive and opted for beer rather than wine with our meals. The Wylam rocket hit the spot. Three courses for £18 off the early menu. Can't be robbed (using the vernacular!). Looking forward to a return visit. Also wanted to say the ambience, decor and staff was second to none. Thank you Blackfriars for a lovely pre-theatre meal.

“Great for special dinners”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2014

The food and service were both excellent but the added charm of this restaurant really is the location, which gave it a very quaint other-worldly charm. I would say it's a perfect place for a romantic dinner date. You'd also get a complimentary glass of champagne if you dine on your birthday (;

“A good place to eat”

Went to this restaurant because of reviews and wasn't disappointed. Plenty of choice on the menu and well presented, staff very helpful and friendly, would definitely eat there again.

“Lovely surprise lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2014

My brother surprised me with lunch here today. When booking he had asked for a particular table which was unavailable when we arrived, the waitress gave us the choice of another one by the window which was actually nicer. They bought out champagne and taster of a mango and chilli sorbet due to getting the tables mixed up. This was a nice touch especially as we had not complained or made a fuss.
The food was lovely, the steak one of the best I have ever had, and all beautifully presented. The staff were wonderful with nothing too much trouble as was the service.
A truly lovely lunch and cannot wait to go back.
