Description: Marco Polo is an Italian bistro that is celebrating its 42nd year of trading. We are an independent restaurant and locally owed. We offer a wide range of pizza/pasta and consider this to be our bread and butter. However we really come in to our own on the a la carte side of the menu. All our dishes are prepared on site and deliver extremely good value. The restaurant is always busy and has great atmosphere. We can cater for most requests. We take reservations and also hold a number of tables back for walk-in custom. So if you're passing pop in.

Had great 3-course meal for 3 including wine and coffee for £40 per head.
Visited on Saturday evening and had not booked. The place was absolutely heaving but they managed to squeeze us in on the top floor with a couple of large parties. The noise made it difficult to be heard but did add to the atmosphere.Considering how busy the restaurant was the speed of service was satisfactory and friendly. I also like the fact they didn't charge for water or stick an automatic service charge on the bill.

It’s good to hear that we delivered a great night for you. Each week we do get to a point where we have to stop taking bookings. There are less desirable tables within the 60 or so we have, which would be inappropriate for advance bookings. We use these for walk in custom that appreciate the nature of the table locations. I’m pleased that you welcomed the atmosphere rather than it using an intrusion.
Thanks and see you again!

I must admit, this review is from a few years ago, but had to select a 2012 from drop down menu. When I visited the place the food was good, the waiter service attentive and the fiery sambuca at the end of the meal was on the house. Great place for a in and out venture into Newcastle upon Tyne.

Visited this restaurant whilst in Newcastle on business after a recommendation. Certainly was not disappointed. Mussel starter was fantastic (worth keeping an extra bid of bread to soak up the sauce) and plenty of them. Belly pork main was excellent as well. Sorry cannot give verdict on dessert - was just too full.

It’s great to hear that you will be back, especially that we are gaining new customers and recommendations are being pushed around. The mussels can be done with a spicy Napoli sauce upon request for next time.
Thanks.

In short, if your looking for a nice relaxed but classy night out / date - go here!

Visited on 2/2/13 a Saturday night. Booked table online for 7.30 but had to wait about 20 mins - but delay was explained to us and wasn't really a hassle. I'm writing this 13 days after the visit and cant remember all we had. But suffice to say my friend (who usually has something to complain about wherever we go) enjoyed her food and didn't complain once. My starter, Mozzarella e granchio was fairly nice although there wasn't too much crab compared to Mozzarella - it was quite tasty though.the rest of the party had the haddock fishcakes and all said they were delicious. The wild mushroom risotto was really tasty and there was more of it than there looked. For desert I had the warm almond and pear tart with almond ice cream and it was one of the most delicious deserts I have ever had.
The service was good considering how busy the place was. The only slight problem was that one of our party had a seat backing on to the main walkway through our part of the restaurant. (Downstairs, the first table on the left as you go through.)The gap wasn't really wide enough and most of the time when someone passed (waiter or customer) he was nudged or felt he had to move into the table -its not life or death just a bit annoying when you're trying to enjoy your meal.
The atmosphere was lively - but not rowdy and we had a really good night. The staff were all really friendly especially the guy in charge of getting us seated - (was he the manager?he had glasses on? ) He was really helpful. It was the first time I'd been there although it was recommended by my other half based on a visit he thinks he made 20 years ago! We'd all probably come again for a special evening out- for us its a bit expensive for us to come regularly.

Thanks for taking the time to review us! I’m delighted that you enjoyed your experience with us! The pear and almond dessert is delicious, try the panna cotta next time.
We are looking at some layout and structural alternations, your feedback regarding the table will be filed and used then, thanks.
I’m pleased that you acknowledged that the service was good despite the busy conditions, let’s not make it another 20yrs……….
