“Cheap and Good”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

Good place to stay if you want to go out in Newcastle. Very close to the train station and very close to all the main bars and clubs. The receptionists are nice and very helpful with everything. Rooms are clean and the beds are very comfortable for a hostel. We only stayed two nights but we stayed for the weekend of the Newcastle v Chelsea game so we expected the place to be overcrowded, it wasn't. The only down side is that it is noisy at night when kids are getting home.

The hostel was nice, they had a nice lounge and the rooms were a good size with comfortable beds am you do have to turn the heat on in the room when you get in it. They offered to store my stuff the day I left. They have free wifi, but only in the lounge, and not in the rooms. The reception was nice and they let me know that if you eat breakfast next door you get 50p off. Overall it was nice for a hostel and I would stay there again.

I was happy to stumble across this big and comfortable hostel during a brief stay in Newcastle. It was very clean, the staff were super friendly and accommodating, and the other guests were respectful. The rooms, WC and showers were all in good condition. Definitely would suggest this to others!

Massive hostel and caters for all types of people, groups, solos etc. Centre of city. Staff were just great and considering it was a saturday night they found me a quiet room and were very accommodating. Very helpful with bike storage. Staff have a very hard job dealing with so many people but did a great job. Room was clean and so were ladies showers and toilets. Kitchen good and free coffee and toast a bonus.

Room Tip: if you want a quiet room don't be afraid to ask....the lovely girl that was behind the desk did...

I have stayed in the 'Backpackers' many times and I have still to find a fault with this hostel. Its cheap, clean and in a magnificent location. Its bang in the middle of Newcastle, close to all local amenities and attractions. The staff are really friendly and will go out of their way to help you find what you need. If you are going, be aware that Newcastle is a haven for stags and hen do's, and whilst most of these stay in hotels, you do get the odd 'lads on tour' groups and so there can be a bit of noise about. There is a lovely sized kitchen, a large common room and a really cool basement where you can play some pool or chill with a few beers. A great place if your going to Newcastle for a football game or a weekend for a few socials but may not be the most suitable place to bring kids.

My lack of understanding about how far a walk would be lead to the girl at reception yelling at me, then she couldnt find something id seen on the internet when she googled it and got aggressive again asif i was making it up or something. it seemed like she just couldnt be polite, never experienced anything like it from a receptionist it was shocking. knives are kept behind reception for safety reasons? might have something to do with newcastle, or the staff, sadly, despite being clean enough the showers worked for five seconds at a time, the atmosphere was horrible. if your a traveller just visit newcastle from edinburgh for the day, they have some good places to stay up in edinburgh and they cost five pounds a night less, megabus is cheap.

Room Tip: stay in edinburgh

Well, I was nervous about staying here as I am used to staying in hotels (and sometimes gorgeous hotels) I was pleasantly surprised (I imagined something very dirty with people lying in the halls!). There was a mixed group of 11 down for a friends birthday. DO NOT STAY HERE AT THE WEEKEND IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP luckily we didnt want to.

Good Points
Location is brilliant! Right across from yates.
Very Clean, bathrooms and showers were aswell.
Beds were actually really comfy esp for bunk beds!!
We all had keys so no one else could accress the room.
Staff were friendly and helpful, you can even rent an iron!

Bad points
Only 2 plugs in the room which meant we were all fighting over them
The only mirror in the room is a clown mirror which is not flattering when getting ready
I though there were alot more males than females which was a bit uncomforatble but then I found that all of newcastle was over run by men?

All in all it is not bad if you only want somewhere to dump your stuff...........Unfortunatley not for me. I prefer to have my small luxuries even if I am hardly in the room. Next time I am going to pay a bit more and stay in a hotel.
