“Good venue, but been in better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

Nothing over-the-top wow about the Academy.

Not a huge Academy compared to other across the country. Has two rooms, Academy 1 (the big, main room) and Academy 2 (the little one upstairs).

Been to countless gigs in both rooms. The smaller room upstairs has a fantastic atmosphere if you're near the front, however the atmosphere is sort of lost a bit in the larger room. I guess it depends on the band and where you're stood.

Drinks are insanely expensive, but that's expected.

Can never really move in the larger room towards the back where merchandise is sold, think it's a bit of a silly place.

However, it is good that there is 3 bars in the larger room but again, the 2 on the floor are just in really silly places.

Also good that all doors are opened at the end of the show, allows you to get out quickly.

The sound and view is always reasonable at the Academy. Never had much of a problem with any of the staff there. Been going there since I was in my teens.

Toilets are good for a gig venue. Plenty of cubicles and all are clean. Change the taps/sinks though. Can't use them without being soaked!!!!

Would recommend a visit but there's better Academy's in the country.

Also much preferred it when it was the Carling Academy, gone down hill since O2 took over unfortunately.

My most recent visit was to see Jimmy Eat World.

“Good Venue!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

This is a great venue but can sometimes get a little claustrophobic the price of the drink's could be better because they are very expensive but you can get free cups of water at any time during any show from the nearest bar to you. The ticket price's are reasonable you get what you pay for some example's of bands Iv'e been to see are Issues,Crown the empire,Your demise, All time low.
I would recommend this venue to anyone.

“In serious need of upgrade”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013

The ONLY things this venue has going for it is location and size - the things inherited from history. The seats are absolutely ancient and so tiny it feels like perching rather than sitting ... the place absolutely STINKS the carpets are both STICKY and SLIMY (something you'd think was impossible) and I really panicky when trying to get out because the design & flow of exit can't cope with large numbers. It's in serious need of some money being spend (rip the carpets up!! wash the floor!!! ) The smell of fresh paint would be far preferable of the pungent aroma of hundreds of spilled drinks. Disgusting. Thankfully I didn't see the toilets.

“Good venue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

Good bits: Cloakroom, usually not a long wait for loo or bar, plenty of space downstairs. Normally can get a good view.

Bad bits: The seating on the balcony is unreserved so you will need to arrive early if you want your pick of the seats.

Good to know: We've been to a few gigs here and have quite often seen kids/teenagers so be aware all sorts of people go to these gigs. If you have a bag with you the security will search it when you go in. They have a nightclub downstairs which I've been to only once. It was good from what I remember - ha ha!

“Curates's Egg”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

It said the doors open at 7pm for the concert. When I got there at 7.2opm the doors were not open and the queue must have been 500m long. Not a good start.
Once the doors opened it moved fairly quickly and there is a burger stall just inside.
There are a fair few stairs to get up to get to the hall and, of course, more to the balcony. The toilets are up a lot of stairs as well.
The venue itself must hold 1000-1500 people so mid sized. The main hall is all standing nut there are a couple of levels so viewing is ok if you don't mind standing further back.
Easy to get to the bar, toilets etc. A pint of lager/beer was around £4.
There is a cloakroom, which is useful.

My main gripe is the acoustics, it was like listening to a band (Ellie Goulding) in another room with the doors closed. It's been a long time since I heard such poor sound quality in the region.
