I have lived here for over 30 years and never even knew there was a tunnel running right under the heart of the city. From Spittal down to the Quayside it is still complete but you can only walk through about half of it. The history of how and why it was built plus it's role in WW2 is fantastic

We pre booked the experience (maximum group size 12) and were led from the farm in the Ouseburn, along the Ouse Burn, to the entrance to the tunnel. I have lived in this area for over 40 years, yet in just two hours I was introduced to an amazing amount of information and sights of which I was unaware. It was only £4 per adult for this tour. A bargain. I do think there is a missed opportunity for income, however, as I would have gladly paid in advance. 4 people who were expected on our tour did not turn up - so the Ouseburn Trust was out of pocket and other potential visitors were not able to attend. The guiding staff were passionate about their role!

The Victoria Tunnel is a must do for anyone living, or visiting the Newcastle area. Pre-book a tour and learn loads of the history of the region relating to the coal industry whilst experiencing what it was like to be under the ground during an air raid - must have been really spooky. The tunnel runs for quite a distance and has walls to deflect bomb blasts, and there's still an old toilet and the location of where bunk beds were put in place for those vital to the war effort. A great experience - you've never seen darkness like it until they turn the lights out to let you experience what it can be like. The guides know what they are talking about and provide a wealth of information in an animating way. We were a group of three and really enjoyed the tunnel experience - it's made us want to learn more about our history. It's certainly not cloustrophobic in the slightest as there seems to be a breeze coming from somewhere. I'm telling everyone to go as it's a must do in Newcastle and you can reserve places on the web.
