“BASIC AND DATED”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

The facilities are very basic and very dated , the room had a mouldy smell and the bed was lumpy, the shower and toilet was shared, not up to standard, breakfast was basic , it was on the continental variety, this hotel is good for those on a budget and not too bothered the facilities

It started by not being able to find it in the dark. No phone number was on the Lastminute.com form. No directions. Then no one at reception. No happy greeting from the Indian young man. I asked for a room without perfumed items and was shown to one that stank of chemicals. The second one was 75% improved on the smell, because the window would not close properly, not safe for a single woman on her own. I had not slept in bri-nylon sheets since the 70's and they did not match. The miniscule towel stank of chemicals. I had brought my own pillow case and when I took theirs off the pillow was heavily stained and smelt awful. The bathroom was shared, I went in and locked the door, leaving my toiletries on the window inside the locked area, when I went to the toilet someone came in and took my room key. I spent hours looking for it to no avail. You would not have put an animal in the bath it was awful to say the least. I had booked 2 nights but could not wait to get out of the place. Definately not suitable for women on their own. It has to be the worst place I have stayed in 30 years. Furnished from the salerooms. Nothing matched. Couldn't face the breakfast. Asked for a refund, the manager was argumentative and hostile. Wish I had read the reviews before booking.

Room Tip: Don't bother booking you will hate it!

Booked for weekend with my friends, knew it would be top spec but didnt expect it to be sooooooo bad. Personally I would have trouble letting my dog stay at this location. It was cold, damp and dirty. Booked four single bedroom room and was presented with two double beds?! No good for four grown men! Advertised on their website as clean and comfortable at a reasonable rate, well the only thing that reasonable was the rate. Didn't end up staying their but still got charged for two nights full price. Didnt have half the amenitites it claimed. Never seen such dirty communal showers. Very unhelpful and unpolite staff.

Wouldnt send an enemy to stay at this place.

I am so shocked at the bad reviews. I don't normally leave reviews but felt compelled to after reading the comments left my some close-minded individuals. At the end of the day this is a HOSTEL - I didn't expect 4* spa facilities!
We had a trio bedroom with a bathroom right next to our room which we always had to ourselves. It was very clean. Throughout our whole stay we only bumped into a couple other guests who were happy and chatty - all in all a good environment, especially if we had of been more socialble on the Saturday.
We never got a chance to try breakfast so can't comment here but the reception staff were so friendly and accomidating, letting me use their printer and reassuring me about the car park.
It's a great location (round the corner is where Byker Grove was filmed!) because it's only about a £6-£7 taxi into town. Definitely use Budget Taxis, they were really knowledgeable about the area.
As for the bedroom it was actually more than I expected - comfy beds, drinking water, plenty of wardrobe space, large window, warm. And tea and coffee making facilities which you don't often find in a hostel.

Room Tip: Make sure the taxi metor reads £1 when you get in. Phone them directly to get a good price, I paid...

In the taxi on the way to the hotel the driver kept making jokes about it being itchy and scratchy and how they had changed the name of the hotel because of the bad reviews on trip advisor. The hotel is in a lovely old building and the staff were friendly and helpful. The decor was tired and the room I stayed in was a bit depressing but it was clean. I checked the sheets, having had two hotels over the past year with dirty sheets and strange smells in the hallways! The sheets were clean and there were no bad smells. The hotel was quiet, probably because everyone was running in the great north run the next day. Overall it was ok for a night, breakfast was ok but the surrounding area didn't seem very nice. But for someone just passing through it was ok.

Never did I think a group of adults would be allowed to run this place! Its vile!! Something i would expect to go on a school trip for 10year olds. Muck all over the walls i dont even wanna know what was in the carpet doubt the beds had been changed. When i booked the hotel we was promised tv free wifi and got neither. It's a dump I don't advise anyone to stay here I think it would be cleaner to stay on the street! I did expect the worst but was still shocked at how awful this place really was! BLEURGGHHHHHH!!! ps Anna burnt your carpet with her curlers in room 35 sorry hun

If you want somewhere just to sleep in Newcastle then this is the place but that's about it... In a run down area walking distance (2 miles) from city centre but was advised by taxi driver to avoid walking around there at night...

Postives: Shared toilet and shower were fairly clean and bedding was clean. Didn't get up for breakfast so can't comment on that. Late-ish checkout at 11am. Free car park with CCTV. No real problems with noise.

Negatives: Small room, shared bathroom with several other rooms, no TV in room, some damp in room, walls thin, not that cheap for what you get...

Wouldn't recommend.
