“Excellent value for lunch, can't wait to go back for tea”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

Fat Buddha is located in the 55 degrees building in Newcastle. The main restaurant is upstairs and there is a bar area downstairs. What immediatly struck me was that the music (60s/70s/80s) seemed a bit innapropriate for the type of restaurant. the lunch menu is very good value £24 for three people with drinks, and provides a taster of the evening menu, with that in mind, I would look forward to visiting the restaurant on an evening.

The decor in the restaurant was impressive as was the cocktail menu.

“Don't go Christmas Eve”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2013

We had been before and enjoyed it so we booked for Christmas Eve, after booking we received a telephone call asking if we could go for 6:00pm not 7:00pm it didn't bother us too much and agreed. When we arrived the bar downstairs was completely closed and in darkness, we were shown to our table upstairs. There were around 12 other people in for meals and around 6 or 7 visible staff, more in the kitchen. I ordered the same as I had enjoyed the last visit, duck and pancakes, Malaysian Chicken Curry, caramelised bananas for desert. It was a total disappointment to say the least. The pancakes were less than half cooked, brittle and cracking not soft. The celery was dry along with the rest of the trimmings (looked like it had been on the work top for hours drying up) the duck was OK. the Malaysian curry was Luke warm (temperature not spice) and congealing, rice was nearly cold. Banana dessert was GOOD! No one came to ask if we were enjoying our starters or if everything was OK - didn't bother to disturb them talking 10 feet away (I had already decided I would never visit again). When our half finished starter was collected they asked, when they knew we were unimpressed the manageress came over made a half hearted apology. We left at 7:40, last ones out. With all the staff, lack of customers I thought service and food would have been great ( as good as previous visits would have been good). Other meals we had were not up to standard. If they can't produce when not busy when can they?
We have had good food there, but won't get bad food or service again as we will never go there again.

“Lovely food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

Booked online for 6 people and requested a booth which we got. Arrived early and was taken straight away to table. Service was excellent, we chose the £23-95 menu and as there was 6 of us knew we could have tasters of lots of things on the menu.

Excellent choices and the food was really good. Drink prices were reasonable too.

The place was packed and there were a lot of people queing to get in but we never felt rushed, although were asked if we would like to take our drinks downstairs but oncethey were told that we hadn't got our dessert and were staying 'put' for the night no probs.

Would definetely go again as the manager is a really professional and courteous man and the food excellent.

The ambience isn't up to the standard of The Pavillion, however the food is better.

“Shocking”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

I have been eating in Fat Buddha Durham for years so was over the moon when the Newcastle one opened up. Having eaten there several times in the lead up to Christmas I was already of the opinion it wasn't a patch on the Durham restaurant. Despite this we booked our xmas party (30+ people) at Fat Buddha Newcastle on Friday 14th December. The table was booked for 8pm and we arrived on time. Absolute shambles. Despite booking weeks if not months in advance they had not allocated enough room for our party. 30 people crammed into a tiny corner. After complaining we were eventually moved to an equally cramped corner. Several of our party got sick of waiting for the food and left. We were eventually provided with food at 10.15pm. I have a modicum of understanding given that it was Christmas but overbooking to this extent is not acceptable.

“High hopes - shattered”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

A party of 12 were looking forward to a pleasant evening around Christmas time and were seriously disappointed. They lost my original booking and the 12 of us ended up on a table for 8. They then after we had ordered our starters tried to move us as someone had not turned up for booking of 12 (mmmmm wonder if this was mine????) between courses was far too long and with some of the mains we ordered fillet steak only to be served sirloin. Drinks were very much at a premium and in the end were ordering 2 rounds at a time so not to go thirsty. A service charge of 10 percent was added to the bill which I refused to pay. Finally I sent an email to the company detailing all this and more and have not received any kind of response which was disappointing. I certainly would not recommend this and wont be going back.
