“A bargain overnight place to stay on Tyneside with a bit of character”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2011

Most everything has been said previously - great staff, great beer, pub food, clean quiet motel style rooms, plenty of parking and handy for various things in the North-East. It was way cheaper than the city centre hotels and much more pleasant. I am not sure I would want to stay at the location for more than a couple of nights, and it would be difficult without a car. The continental breakfast was a bit of a disappointment. The bed coverings were a bit odd and heavy, but we found some blankets and were able to make up a comfortable bed, although it did have a plastic cover on the mattress.

Overall, I would probably stay again if I am in the area.

We arrived just before 9pm and the staff kept the kitchen open late even though it was snowing heavily so we could have dinner, which was tasty. The rooms were toasty and we had a pleasant stay.

I stayed 3 nights at the Keelman's Lodge, my third visit in 4 years. My stay this time was as good as the first, and it just gets better every time.
Yes it is a little off the beaten track, but no more than a few minutes drive from both the A1 and the Metro Centre, it is ideally placed for both business and leisure.
The addition of the second accommodation block a few years ago was a welcome one, with new and upgraded facilities from the original accommodation. My room was very well appointed (I found nothing missing or broken, decor is good condition and clean), quiet and comfotable, and the standard of housekeeping is also very good, with plentiful provision of refreshments and toiletries.
The pub/restaraunt is very nice with an excellent menu (nothing too fancy) with good food and generous portions. The staff are extremeley helpful and friendly and every time I have stayed and eaten there, I have left looking forward to the next time!

I found this place was only a short distance from where i was working in Newcastle. Keelmans has all the ingredients i need when travelling through. Good rates, Modern well equipped rooms, Onsite Microbrewery, Good Value restaurant, sensible breakfast times. The food has been consistently good.
Only drawback is that its a bit out of the way unless you go by car.

I booked accommodation and dinner for a group of 19 members of an archaelogical group visiting Hadrians Wall and the Roman Forts. What a find! Pleasant clean rooms away from the main building, friendly and helpful staff, good food and a micro-brewery attached (fortunately they closed the bar at 11pm, otherwise some of us might still be there'. They don't accept stag and hen parties. Both the bar and restaurant were busy but the rooms were well equipped and quiet and the total experience was a refreshing change from characterless chain hotels.

The rooms feel a little sterile, but everything was clean and comfortable, the staff was helpful, and the beer -- multiple varieties of real ale brewed on site -- was amazing.

Have just stayed for 3 nights at the Keelmans on our way back from Orkney. It's just as good as when we stayed there for the first time last year. We had room number 14, a wonderful room on the first floor which was comfortable spacious and airy and we noted that two pillows had been provided this time as we had suggested on the hotels feedback form, top marks for that Keelmans. Breakfast was excellent and other fine meals were served from 12 till 9pm. The beer is the best selection in the area and was in excellent condition. It was also no trouble to arrange for some beer to take away with us when we left. Ample free parking is available on site. We shall definitely return.
