“Great small venue”
Reviewed December 21, 2013

Went to see Lindisfarne this week (who were fantastic), never been to the City Hall before but is was great, yes the seats were very cramped, but we spent most of the evening on our feet, singing and dancing anyway! Only niggle is that the doors were locked until 6.45pm despite being told that the venue would be open from 6pm, I believe this was a mistake as there were plenty of people there and money would have been made in the bar before the concert, as it was it was a real rush getting everyone to their seats after people tried to buy memorabilia and get programmes, so the concert was late starting.
By the way, point to Management of the venue, the doors were not only locked but padlocked from the inside which is against Health & Safety rules as there were many people inside, which had there been a fire, they would have been at risk if the padlock key wasn't immediately available.

“Great intimate venue”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

Great venue very helpful staff, brilliant atmosphere. Went to see Mott the Hoople, the whole place was on its feet from the moment the band hit the stage. Security coped admirably no dram just made sure everyone was safe and had a good time. Other venues on this tour could learn a lot from this place

“Intimate concert venue”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

8of us attended the Mott the Hoople concert 40 years after last seeing them at the city hall.
The seats are reasonably sized but as the crowd immediately stood when Mott arrived on stage it didn't really matter. The bar area in the cellar is manic and long waits are to be expected. This is a brilliant place to watch a band and the atmosphere can be electric

“Knock it down”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

My first visit to this venue was to see a charity event 'Last Night of the Proms'. Sadly the promoters failed to sell all the tickets, which was great shame, since it was all for a very good cause.
The venue itself is dreadful. It reminded me of a Methodist hall crossed with a synagogue, existing as it does on two levels; the stalls and then a wrap-around balcony that runs along both sides and then up the back of the hall. The acoustics are appalling, the seating uncomfortable and cramped and the stage is tiny.
I now understand that there are plans to flatten it... yes, good idea. And rebuild a modern venue that is comfortable and takes advantage of the latest technology to ensure that customers can actually hear everything.

“Use it or lose it”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

The City Hall has recently been under threat of closure due to Local Govt cuts. It's a fabulous building and would be a shame to lose it. Also there is a rock night once a month in the basement bar. Recommended.
