I stayed at this hotel on a business trip for 2 nights. Friendly staff, nice rooms. The rooms are not very large but who cares on a short business trip :)
The hotel is across the street from the stadium and the metro station. The universities are about a 10 minute walk and walking downtown takes about 15 minutes.
A taxi from the airport was about 15 Pounds. The sports bar is nice.

A new hotel right opposite the football ground in a rather isolated location but with pubs, restaurants and bars not far away.
Its style is trendy and modern.
The upside: quick, efficient check-in, though the staff were not as friendly as others have reported – not rude, just not warm. The room (503) on the 5th floor was quiet, despite being near the lift and over the road.
The downside: Despite clever use of mirrors, the “king size” room was not that big with barely 18 inches one side of the bed. All the doors in the corridor shut with a slam which is irritating late at night or early in the morning as others leave.
Worst of all: No wardrobe whatsoever. Just four (yes four) coat hangers on hooks. This is mean even for a business man staying one night wanting to hang a suit and shirt, let alone a woman or couple with more to hang up.
The drench shower is something you either like or hate – worked fine for me.
Best of all was the excellent range of real, free, coffee from a self-service machine in reception.
Others have commented on the cost of breakfast. I was told you could book in advance at £9.50 or so, but I didn’t try it.
SUMMARY: OK for a business man (not woman – nowhere to hang anything) in town for one night and wanting a bed – especially good if you’re going to the footy.

Room Tip: Probably quieter the higher you are and not on the road side.

Stayed over one night for business and first impressions were the lobby is very 'designed' with a full sized horse lamp and animal skins on the floor. The staff were very friendly though and when I asked for a quiet room they put me on the 5th floor facing St James Park, a busy road and buses.

I asked to be moved as a light sleeper that was not great so they put me at the back where the suites are for £10 extra on 9th floor. This was better but not 'out in the country quiet' obviously and I had to turn off the fridge and air con as they buzzed and still I could hear cars when dawn broke.

The room was excellent good sized, comfy twin beds and a nice bathroom with powerful shower, it was very modern and good black out blinds, it had a small kitchen too if needed.

Apart from the fact it was too noisy for me the added reason not to stay is the breakfast in the downstairs 'sports pub' area was pretty badly organised. You take a seat and wait, but it is some bar stools, some tables and the service is slow, many walked in and looked around not knowing what to do.

There was a more limited continental choice in a small area than most hotels in this bracket. After 10 minutes sitting I finally caught the very busy waitress eye, no full english option just eggs done how I like with bacon or sausage and some diced fried potato's and half cooked spring onions!!

Stay here if you sleep heavily and noise is not an issue and you don't mind a disorganised breakfast.

Room Tip: Back of the hotel is a little quiter where the suites are. Make breakfast when it is quiet as later it is pretty badly run and you will wait for service.

Myself and 2 friends stayed at the Sandman Signature in Newcastle for a weekend in July 2012. The reason we chose this hotel was because it was a last minute deal and was the cheapest on various comparison websites but i would definitely stay again. We wanted a double suite (to sleep 3) and had a few problems booking it through the website so after ringing the hotels reception, they not only assisted me in booking online but also gave me a free upgrade code to use. This meant we were upgraded to an executive suite.

The hotel was lovely inside not only the hallways and lobby areas but also the rooms themselves. The only gripes we had with the room was although the room came with kitchen facilities - fridge, kettle, toaster, hob, microwave, etc, there was no oven (but there was a dishwasher and a washing machine, which amused us!) We did enquire and were advised that this was the same in every room. And the telephones in the room did not work, which we were advised was due to the fact theyd had a storm a week earlier. Other than this, the room was fab. Enough space for 3 females and all our baggage. We did have to request extra wine glasses and cups, but with this request, we also got extra bathrobes, cutlery, pillows, toiletries and washing up liquid and sponges.

The staff were brilliant. Really chatty and helpful. Nothing was too much for them.

The location was perfect (well for us anyway!) We were within walking distance of the pubs and clubs (i'm talking 10 minutes walk from tiger tiger which, if your planning on going clubbing, is a fab club with so many rooms of different music, there will be something to suit everyone). And about 15 minutes walk from the shopping centre. We literally parked the car on the Friday and walked everywhere.

If i was to go Newcastle again, id definitely go to the Sandman. Id just ensure that if i was planning on using the kitchen facilities, that i only took food that could be made with a microwave or hob!

Room Tip: Try contacting the hotels reception before booking and asking if they have any discount codes to use online.
