“what a great place to go”
Reviewed July 5, 2014

Before you go to this English Heritage site, you should be aware that the House is unfurnished and not well decorated. You can see the size of the rooms, the cellars etc and appreciate the views from the house. The walk to the Castle through the ex quarry is stunning and well worth the effort. The site has a very nice cafe and there is a picnic area. Well worth the vidit.

“grounds are beautiful!”
Reviewed July 5, 2014

I've been coming here since the aye of 4, i'm now 19. The house is great always showing different exhibitions and its always very interesting to see. Decided at a young age I was to get married here ( I wish ) The grounds are spectacular to walk around, can get some great photos and it's a lovely day out for some peace and quiet if with a partner. Always feel at home here, great staff too!

Reviewed July 1, 2014

I went here as they has a Jane Austin costume exhibition on. The house it self was very disappointing. However the gardens were amazing.

“Wonderfull Grounds But Not A Great Deal To See In The Buildings”
Reviewed June 22, 2014

You really, in my opinion, go to Belsay for the gardens and the remarkable walk along the path to the castle which winds int way through the old quarry. The Hall and Castle are interesting enough but are not a special experience. There is a cafe on site, which is again OK but nothing special and there is also a gift shop.

“Nice Gardens”
Reviewed June 20, 2014

The hall and castle were disappointing as they were pretty much empty shells. You might say that they are all like that, but we have also been to Downe House, which was full of interesting stuff. Nevertheless, the walk to the castle through the quarry was brilliant. The paper hankie trees were magnificent.

Have come to the conclusion that English Heritage sites are probably not for us.
