“Up to the usual Malmaison standard”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

Situated right on the banks of the Tyne, the Malmaison in Newcastle offers the usual level of slightly quirky luxury of it's sister hotels.

My room was spacious, clean and comfortable with the usual huge bath tub. Staff were friendly and helpful without being over familiar and all in all a great place to stay.

As ever, my only negative is the dimly lit corridors which make you feel like you are in an episode of the Twilight Zone but, once you get in your room all is good.

Stayed twice recently on business. Located right on the waterfront and good for an evening stroll. Lovely rooms, well-equipped and all to a very high standard. Special praise must go to the staff who are all extremely well trained and friendly - and also to the quality of the restaurant offering. The breakfasts were excellent - and the prix-fixe dinner menu was memorable. Even now, some three weeks after staying each of the three courses is distinct in my mind! No need to go a la carte here!

My only critiscism is that stygian gloom has been designed in at head office. Some sort of design concept as in "Malmaison - it's naughty purple for naughty people." Well, all it actually serves to do is make old bank managers like me tripp up over every half hidden step, and feel like I've escaped from a tunnel blinking wildly when stepping out of the hotel. What this hotel really needs is a job lot of white emulsion for the public areas.

We booked two rooms here in April on the special Sunday deal.

To qualify for the hugely discounted rate, you need to spend at least £100 per couple on food and drink on Sunday evening, but because we had tickets for that night at the Metro arena, we were allowed to offset this amount against Sunday lunch instead.

We were certainly not disappointed.

This hotel is first class.

The food was very good. The service impeccable and the hotel's position on the Quayside is
brilliant.

We will certainly stay in this hotel next time we visit Newcastle... even if there is no discounted deal available.

We stayed for a birthday celebration in the Vistjafjord suite on the Chateau floor. Beautiful room with comfortable large bed, separate lounge area and a large bathroom with separate bath and shower. The view is not too great in this room, looking down towards the Ouseburn area instead of to the Millenium bridge but that was the only downside. Restaurant staff did not give us the 'menu prix fixe' despite being advised we were on a DB&B package, although we would probably have chosen from the a la carte menu anyway. Steak and lobster were good, although lobster was only just warm. Disappointing that the wine waiter doesn't know the difference between Beaujolais and Burgundy, as the Chiroubles wine we ordered was listed on the wine list as a Burgundy wine.

The lobby of the Malmaison is so fashionably dark and it's a little unnerving walking in from a bright day. It's a strange and almost claustrophobic contrast from the open space and water of the River Tyne directly outside and I must say it's not to my taste.

Stopped here for a two night work stay in late May. Service was OK throughout my stay, if a tiny bit sniffy. The "boutique" label the Malmaison gives itself is not quite accurate - this is a large hotel and part of a chain so don't expect anything massively out of the ordinary in here unless you think the lift announcing which floor you are on in French is a genius touch of individuality rather than a pretentious annoyance.

The room was excellent it must be said - a great big space with a massive comfy bed, a well appointed bathroom and a nice armchair-sofa type piece sat in front of the TV, plush carpet and plenty of storage throughout.

When you get down to the detail, that's where the problems start. There's a packed out and tempting minibar fridge in your room. But there's no price list to be found, meaning you're unsure how much that much needed bottle of water in the middle of the night might be costing you. The Television was weak - a bad picture, no HD and a very limited range of channels. The Wi-fi, as with most hotels these days, was unfit for purpose - constantly crashing out and completely useless for streaming something like BBC Iplayer.

My room was one of the cheapest options and, as you would expect, it had one of the worst views imaginable - straight into the offices opposite to the extent you can even see which websites the office workers are browsing as they sit there.

I am sure the suites and luxury rooms are a far better deal and I'm sure the bar and restaurant are excellent - although I didn't try any of these.

Overall as a business traveller there are better places to stay nearby within the same pricerange. The location by the river, close to so many places to go out is a real bonus and on a summers evening it makes for nice walking. On the whole not the best place I've stayed but certainly not the worst by any stretch.

Room Tip: Try and avoid a view into the offices opposite.

Stayed here with my wife for two nights mid June. We took a standard room with Millennium bridge view and a Queen bed, we were on the fourth floor. Room was great, clean and excellent view. On the Friday night we booked the date night which included a 3 course meal and champagne, food was excellent as were the drinks in the bar beforehand. Hotel is clean and quirky with the dark corridors and lifts but this all added to the ambience. Staff were helpful and pleasant, the only slight point for improvement could be some training on the wines for the restaurant staff.
We would thoroughly recommend this hotel and will be returning very soon.

Room Tip: Book a river view and pay the extra for a bigger standard or superior room.

We stayed for just one night on 1 December 2012 having used Malmaison before. We like their different take on style. The suite was good as expected with fine views over the River Tyne but could have been much cleaner. Service in the restaurant at breakfast was good but at reception it was really poor. You don't mind things not quite going quite as they should, but when staff don't care and make no secret of the fact, well that's unacceptable. On checkout, we asked if someone would get back to us with the points they hadn't resolved but sadly no one did.

Room Tip: |Choose a room overlooking the River Tyne

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
