Have used this hotel before, but not for a while. All definitely use it again for a city stay.

Nice medium size room and a nice clean bathroom, some rooms have river views and these are spectacular as the hotel faces the millennium foot bridge on the Tyne. The room I had this time was to the side of the hotel and it was quiet which mad for a good night of sleep.

Parking is close by and whilst there is a £10 charge for parking you can leave the car parked there all day after your stay, wch is a real bonus.

Quick efficient friendly staff make the Mal a good place to stay if you want a night out on the quayside or at the Sage, which is 10 mins walk across the bridge. Lots of nice restaurants and bars are within 5 mins walk of the hotel too.

Would easily recommend this as a good place to stay in Newcastle

We stayed here for a long weekend & the hotel is great value. It is far more stylish and cool than the price would suggest. A very chic & sophicticated room with lots of lovely touches like the free toiletries, great sound system, and a general feeling of luxury.
A great breakfast gave a perfect start to each day.
The malmaison was very busy & it is obvious why !

My first impression on registering at Reception was how dark and gloomy the Hotel was. This continued as we were shown to our room along darkly lit corridors. The floor announcements in French in the lift seemed eccentric

The room we had reserved for three nights was designated superior and had a good sitting area. It had all that we required except sufficient drawer space. The two TVs seemed lavish. It also had an iron/ironing board and a hair dryer. The bathroom was nice with a fixed shower high up on the wall over the bath. The shower head was large and looked like an upturned veg collander. Views from the room were of the Quayside looking to the south over the Millennium Bridge.

The hotel is located on Sandgate and is housed in what used to be the Co-op main offices. There is an entrance on Sangate with steep stairs down to the gloomy reception. The other entrance is a level walk off the quayside and is where the taxis are available. Hotel car parking is in a public multi-storey across the road some 50 metres walk. The reserved area is on the top floor, which is uncovered. There is a daily charge for parking payable in the Hotel

The dining room was pleasant and the breakfast was good. It does get very busy on Sunday mornings. The bar is a nice place to sit and watch the activity along the quayside and over the Millennium Bridge.

The Hotel is well located for strolls along the quayside and acroos the bridge to the Sage and Baltic. The walk into the centre of Newcastle is about 10-15 mins and if you walk via Dean Street it involves climbing a very steep hill. There is a public bus service that stops on the quayside and will take you to the centre.

We enjoyed our stay. The Hotel is pretentious in my view, but I do understand that there is a market for this. There are many other options to choosse from within a short dstance.

Enjoyed a wonderful evening in this Quayside location with great access to the bars and restaurants along the river and into the "toon". Comfortable bed and excellent late night bar. Breakfast was a full selection of healthy cerals and fruits and a hearty English fry up.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view if you must

Stayed at Malmaison for one night. Have to say location is excellent loads of pubs, clubs and restaurants on the doorstep. Initial impressions of the hotel. Exterior - beautiful building very elegant. Interior - mmmm the jury is out very dark gothic and the halls are painted purple which personally looks quite cheap and tacky. The room was spacious really nice everything you could ask for although the bathroom was really small but still quite tastefully decorated with a really nice shower. If you want a nice view of the river this is more expensive but if you got the money then it's definately worth it. Overall excellent hotel really nice friendly staff but interior decor each to their own.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
