This is a nice hotel and the location for the Quayside is perfect, Room was nice and spacious with a resonable level of quality, but look closely and it is getting a bit tired round the edges, carpets stained and woodwork chipped. However for a central hotel and if you get the right deal this is a good hotel, major complaint though is the servixe at the breakfast, the hotel had a large group in 30+ guests which as a result seemed to through the rest of the restaurant into chaos, took 20mins to get coffee and almost an hour to recieve a very plain and small breakfast really not worth the extra money and in future i will stay room only and eat elsewhere, tables not set properly, or cleaned away quickly really spoilt the end of the weekend, I have emailed the hotel group and i hope this was a one of but a large hotel should be ready fo such groups as they know who they have staying and if required should provide extra staff, dont let this put you off staying as everything else was acceptable but just keep your fingers crossed for a quiet weekend.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the river

Our first visit to a Malmaison establishment has left us feeling disappointed.

We checked into the "pride of the suite fleet", the Ark Royal Exec suite, expecting something fairly special but have been left feeling deflated.
The big sell of the room are the twin baths facing a plasma screen T.V. We were looking forward to watching a DVD but as we quickly discovered only one of the three televisions in the room is linked to a DVD player which left us craning our necks at a ninety degree angle! Equally one of the baths was chipped inside and was faded in comparison to the other. Television reception was poor and the remote control for the DVD player did not work. For the cost of the room per night we expected the level of technology to match the price.

Our other gripe was the cleanliness of the room. Before check in we were told housekeeping were doing a "final sweep" of the room. It appears they were checking for something other than dirt, though who knows what! There is a commanding view of the Millenium bridge with two large floor to ceiling windows, however one of the equally as large curtains had come off its runner and had been left to hang precariously! The other negative we found was the dirty marks adorning the walls, where no effort had been made to remove them, never mind the floor to ceiling black streak of grime located next to the bed.

In our opinion the room had definitely seen its best and felt tired and in need of a major overhaul. Though perhaps like the ship it was named after, retirement would be a more appropriate option.

We've stayed here four times now in the last two years with our daughter being at Newcastle University and each time has been excellent. Location is great especially at night when the Millennium Bridge is illuminated. We've eaten in and the food has been very good. The breakfasts are excellent with great choice and nice and relaxed. One of the best things is the staff as they are friendly and helpful - this time the lady on reception even remembered me by name throughout our stay - how's that for service given we were staying only one night this time. All in all superb!

Visited on business. Room large but decor little tired. Trying to look 'opulent' on the cheap. Corridors dark and purple colour looks strange and scuffed rather than funky. Bathroom spotless and very good shower. No robes or slippers. Staff very nice. Good breakfast selection with attentive service. Ok for business. Not sure if I would be as pleased if I had booked for a special occasion.

Stayed here on Easter Saturday with high expectations having previously stayed at the Hotel du Vin in Newcastle... unfortunately these expectations were not met. It was a special occasion so we paid for a suite and were met with a wonderful view of... the office block next to the hotel! We were also met by a not so clean bathroom (quite a fair amount of dust, hairs in shower and dirty glass). I was also surprised to find that we had not been supplied with shampoo. We had also booked to eat in the restaurant that night and had heard great things about it so were really looking forward to it. The food was really good - will give it that, the service however.. not as good. We had quite a young waitress who on arrival thrust us with set menus with some sort of feel of expectance about this and also a verbal list of some dishes that had alterations to certain components. Friendly enough but couldn't really answer some of our questions, and forgot about additional drink orders we made throughout the night. When we came to ordering the starter my partner wanted to order was met with the reply that it wasn't available - surely this is something that should have been mentioned when we were told about the other dishes? Or if it had just recently ran out since we had arrived she could have had the decency to inform us of this. I think what really annoyed the both of us the most was that as we had just finished our main dishes another couple were seated next to us. They were met by who I presume to be the maitre-d. He went on to explain a whole array of specials - none of which had been mentioned to us (a Mackerel starter that would have more than satisfied my partner after having been told his chosen starter wasn't on and had to settle for a single piece of pate). And also a chateaubriand that we would most definitely have picked to share between us over individual steaks. I suppose if we dine here again we will know to ask about the specials. I guess from the experience having paid over £200 in the restaurant and a further near £300 on the suite we did feel quite cheated. But bad things aside we did enjoy it and as already mentioned the food was great (particularly the breakfast) and the beds were amazingly comfortable. With a bit of a shake up this hotel has the potential to be one of the best in Newcastle!

Loved this hotel - the location was perfect and worth paying a little extra for a view of the Millenium Bridge - lovely when lit up at night. Nice continental breakfast too with lots of healthy options. A great stay!

Stayed here for one night on Saturday. We booked a room with a view of the millennium bridge - absolutely loved the view! It made our stay. Staying in a room without a view, would have been like staying in an average hotel, so is definitely worth paying the extra for the view.
Bed was very comfy with good quality bedding and pillows. Some of the black furniture appeared a little dated but wasn't a problem. Bathroom was very nice and modern, complete with great toiletries.
We really liked the fact it was a 12pm check-out, however, check-out was quite hectic and there didn't seem to be enough staff to cope with the demand.
All-in-all a nice hotel, in a great location, in a fantastic city!
