Malmaison Newcastle

Have stayed at Mal several times before. Always greatly enjoyed it! We have stayed in a suite before and even though very nice not really worth the money.

This time we stayed in room 603. WOW! Opened the door to be greated by the Tyne bridge, a spacious room and then through the other window a fantastic view of the Millennium bridge! So a dual aspect room! We had paid £179 for 2 nights (which was a special deal) but enjoyed ourselves so much we decided to stay an extra night which was £115. I would happily pay this if this is the standard rate for that room! I had phoned a week earlier to say could they note on my booking records that I would like a spacious room with a view. So, this may well be a good idea because it certainly paid off!

This room must surely be the best room in the hotel as the views are sensational! I don't think any other rooms in the hotel would have this view as the hotel is overlooked by another building so you may get the view of the Millennium briidge but not the Tyne bridge. I don't even think the suites which are the floor above us would have this view. It really was spectacular!!

The bed was a bit hard and I just mentioned this on leaving and the receptionist advised that if we had mentioned this earlier they could have provided a soft mattress topper. This isn't really a gripe just a suggestion.

There is a Tesco 5 mins walk away just by the Law Courts which is handy for snacks and things! Unless, you want to use the mini-bar!!!

We will definitely be staying again and hopefully in room 603 unless you all read this and fully book it!!!!!

Room Tip: Choose Room 603 if you want a room with a view!

This hotel is great as far as location. Right on the quayside and within walking distance to some on Newcastle's fantastic restaurants. The rooms are spotless and the facilities are what you would expect from this hotel. Breakfast was good and had a wide variety of food on offer. As from my other reviews I'm not an easy customer but this hotel was great and good value for money. Well done

My partner & I have just. returned from a 2 night midweek stay at the Mal which was most enjoyable. We took the 2 night October deal which included Dinner on the first night. Dinner was nice and the service in the restaurant was exceptional. The dining room itself is very dark like the rest of the Hotel. The Mal colour scheme is deep purple and the lighting is very dark and minimal. It can do with being brighter in all areas of the Hotel to be honest. The outside of the Hotel is getting a refurb at the moment so hopefully they will give the insides a lick of paint and add some lighting. The rooms are a really good size, the bathrooms products are lush, the room maids are very polite and helpful. Overall it was a good stay and we would both return.

We visited for a small family get together, we had booked a table in the Brasserie restaurant , it was chosen because of its location which is great and it's reputation, which is good. The entrance to the restaurant from outside the hotel was locked, no signage inside showing the way and after finally getting to speak to a staff membe we were directed to the first floor. We had a table booked for 7.15pm and arrived in good time, we were asked to wait in the bar area while our table was prepared, we bought drinks and our order was taken. we eventually took our seat in the empty restaurant at 8pm the first course was ok but I must say the 'hand cut' chips were akin to McDonald's fries. The main course was a disaster 3 meal orders wrong, items forgotten about, steak tough and chewy, not the excellent meal we expected. We were given a complimentary bottle of wine as an apology which we accepted. Although the evening went well the food and service was not what I expect from what is supposed to be a prestigious hotel I doubt I will return and really can't recommend the restaurant.

I booked in for a spa session with female friends and family. Althought there wasn't many facilities we still had a lovely time and enjoyed our treatments. I had a full body massage which was one of the best I'd ever had! There is no pool, only sauna and relaxation room but after my groupe and arrived another party joined us. Threre wasn't a lot of space but they were a plesant group of ladys and we had a bit of a natter. Altogether there was a little room for improvent but enjoyable all the same!

a very peaceful 2 night stay with a view of all the quayside has to offer from our room, attentive and helpful staff.....well, bar james on reception who had us looking around for basil, sybil et al when we booked in such was his brusque and borderline rude attitude!

perfectly located with access to the baltic, sage and quayside bars and restaurants and perfectly pointed with the bar overlooking the 'blinking eye' millenium bridge!

Room Tip: request a view of the river, it's worth any extra you might have to pay!

The hotel is in a great location on the Quayside close to tourist attractions, bars, restaurants etc. We stayed for one night in a 'fantastic executive' room which was not what we had hoped for as it had a view of the multi storey carpark. The hotel also had scaffolding on the outside which, to be fair, didn't impact on us other than spoiling the outside appearance of the hotel. I would have expected to be warned in advance of this though just as a matter of courtesy. The room was spacious and well equipped but not immaculately clean with a few stains on the carpets and damaged paintwork. The room also smelled vaguely of smoke which was quite unpleasant. The bed wasn't particulalrly comfortable and the bathroom was OK but nothing exceptional, although the complimentary toiletries were better than average.

The decor in the communal areas is very dark and, again, not really up to standard with marks on carpets, paintwork and upholstery. It all looked a bit tired and slightly shabby but perhaps the scaffolding is an indication that the hotel is starting a refurbishment programme.

The staff were efficient but not what I would describe as friendly. We paid quite a lot for our one night stay stay and we really didn't feel that we got value for money. I doubt if we will return as there are lots of other hotels in the area to choose from.

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
