The Waterside Hotel
Reviewed September 21, 2012

The Hotel is currently undergoing extensive renovations. The Hotel is not informing guests with outstanding bookings of this huge inconvenience. Avoid at all costs for the foreseeable future because if you turn up and cannot stand the smell of wet paint or tons of dust they will still make you pay for the room. you have been warned!

We booked this hotel the day before we arrived & there was no mention of flooding, no lifts, the smell, bare plaster or no carpets on the website(Booking.com) or we would not have booked. The ground floor & 1st floor were affected, so no lifts. We were told the bedrooms were alright which they seemed to be at 1st. There was an air conditioner that didn't work in our room so told reception & was given another one which didn't help either,so ended up with 2 in our room taking up even more space. This was Mon 3rd of September so was not that hot exept in our room 202 at the back it was about 30 degrees.I woke up at 1.30 pouring with perspiration, so went down to reception in a bad mood. The man apologised & offered me another room but, it could not be locked as it was broken,I didn't care I just wanted to sleep! At least in this room we could open a window & get a breeze in the room unlike the other one. So the next morning we went to reception again & explained all that had happened, she offered us another room to look at. This was far better with proper air conditioning & 2 windows on the front & corner. She said it needed servicing & we could have it later & that they would move all our luggage if we put it all on the bed. Had a really good nights sleep which by this time we needed. I must say the 3 receptionists we saw were as helpful as they could be in the cirumstances. I would stay there again when it's fit for guests as the staff were very friendly & the breakfast was great.Didn't like the parking much as it was across the road so we didn't like leaving our motorbike there as it wasn't secure. Loved Newcastle & the people!!

Room Tip: No breeze at the back

This is the first time I write a review on trip advisor, I am doing it to prevent people from coming in here and also for the hotel to realize that kind of treatement to their guests is unacceptable. 1, The flood damage was bad, on the ground and first floor no carpet and dusty, no lift so be prepared to climb the stars.
2, There was a FLY in our room (we never opened a window), so disgusting, gross!!!. Never had seen such a thing in a hotel.
3, Matresses were old and thin, you can feel (not in a good way if it exists) and hear the springs as you move and while seated on the bed you can feel its base. I was already a bit upset at this point but trying to be understanding. However, on the top of all of this:
4, Around 7:30 a NOISE STARTED (fly flying around me as I write), intermitent NOT LETTING US SLEEP, that is what I paid for !!!!!!, SLEEEP!!!. I called to the front desk - they deeply apologized but said nothing could be done. They couldn't give us another room because they were all booked and an external company was doing the repairs for them. I don't care if it is your hotel doing the repairs or not, it is your business! People pay you to have a place to sleep, you should take care of all the details around that. The person at the front desk was very kind but not helpful, at least they could have offered some kind of compensation/discount, but clearly they don't know anything about customer service, go to a place where they do.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel.

Sorry to say that I was really disappointed with our stay here. There was no indication on the website that the flood damage had been so extensive (which may have swayed my decision to book, which is probably why they didn't say anything on the website!) and on arrival we also discovered that the lift from the pavement was out of order, which meant lugging a heavy suitcase up two flights of stairs. My workplace also flooded so I understand they were trying to make the best out of a bad situation and the receptionist was very apologetic about it all but still....

The room itself looked quite posh on first entry but on closer inspection was very shabby; there was a lot of mould on the grouting and sealant in the shower cubicle and around the sink and also the shower basin didn't drain well, fittings had been changed but the bare wall plugs were still visible and the tap moved every time you turned it on. There were quite a few dents and scrapes in the paintwork on the walls and again, bare wall plugs and nails where fittings had been moved about. The window glass was filthy both inside and out which spoilt a lovely view of the Swing Bridge. But the bed was comfy and clean.

My partner is vegetarian and I'd had a confirmation email from a staff member assuring me that Quorn sausages would be provided at breakfast. However they didn't appear! We had literally just sat down with bowls of fruit to start when our cooked breakfasts were plonked in front of us; surely you wait until your guests are ready if you can see they are still eating?!

On checking out, there was no-one at reception and no-one answered when we rang the bell.

Really sorry but overall this wasn't the boutique hotel stay the website promised :-(

My boyfriend and i found our recent stay in this hotel spot on. Our room was spacious, clean and modern with a great view. The hotel was recently flooded and therefore renovations were underway however this caused no hinderence at all to our stay. The staff were extremelly friendly and welcoming and were more than happy to give advice on some places to go. Location is excellent with a lot of lovely bars and restaurants in close proximity. The hotel also has a great little bar for chilling out and the breakfasts are brilliant! Fantastic value for money i would definitely recommend this hotel.

Really good location. I stayed there the night after it flooded. Staff worked really hard to keep the place open. Single room was small, but clean, tidy and comfortable with a well stocked refreshment tray.
Special thanks goes to the lady who cooked my breakfast, despite getting a soaking earlier on. Her customer care was second to none.
