Surtees Hotel

I'm so pleased this hotel has started to get some positive reviews we stayed here in May with a groupon voucher. Prior to going we read some truly awful reviews and feared the worst!!! However!! The rooms were very nice, not state of the art or ultra modern but they were clean, tidy and comfortable. The food at breakfast was fantastic, the staff were extremely welcoming and very efficient. The location of the hotel is fantastic for shopping and sight seeing. I would definitely stay in this hotel again.

When we first saw the entrance we thought "what have we let ourselves in for" but we were very pleasantly surprised. We had a lovely first floor room very clean and tidy, the breakfasts were very nice. We found the staff very pleasant and helpfull. It was in a good central location we walked from the train station it took 10-15 mins. Some of the reviews mentioned noise, we were right above the pub okay we heard a bit of noise but it never kept us awake. We loved our stay in Newcastle thought it was a lovely town and would stay in surtees again no problem.

We stayed here for 3 nights and were more than happy with what we got for what we paid. Okay it's not 5 star but definitely 3+. Our room was clean and comfortable, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was nicely cooked to order and served by very pleasant staff. It's served in the breakfast room which is bright and spacious with plenty of tables and chairs, unlike many of larger hotel chains we've stayed in where it has been like a cattle market every morning with people fighting at the buffet areas as if they hadn't seen food for weeks! None of that here, there was a good continental breakfast plus full English.

The location is great, handy for the Quayside and just 10 minutes walk to the city centre and shopping areas. Maybe we're heavy sleepers, but we weren't disturbed at all by the noise from the clubs and bars round about. So, if you want 5*, book into a 5* hotel and pay accordingly, but if you want a nice room at a reasonable price, look no further.

In a great location in Newcastle, with most of the night life and the shops in walking distance. Clean hotel and very friendly staff. We had a problem with our electricity in the room and the receptionist was happy to come up and show us how it worked. Another reason to stay is the very cheap prices and it is ideal for a short stay. You have to be happy with using the stairs though cause the lift doesn't work. I would recommend this to others.

Room Tip: I stayed on the top floor(room 32). there was less noise from the streets and it had a good view of...

We stayed in a superior room for a great price for two nights. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. We stayed in a superior room on the second floor and could not fault it. Plenty of space in the double that we had. The bathroom was fresh and new with a good shower and plenty of hot water. Good quality bedding and towels. The breakfast in the bright clean dining room could not be faulted, fresh hot food served by great staff, again a good choice considering the price. The approach to the hotel is not the best, at the end of the day you have to consider the price that you have paid and what you are getting for your money. The location is great for the Quayside and getting around town. I think the hotel has had some very bad reviews from certain groups on hen/stag nights - the new bedside table top in our room had been purposely damaged by a lighter, damage which is not the hotels fault. A big re-furbishment program has been carried out in the hotel and the rooms that we saw were fresh and clean. The lift was fully operational during our stay. We stayed Wednesday and Thursday nights which were very quite and not noisy at all, our window was open all night and we slept really well. Quiet possibly the weekends could be noisy, we did notice when we were leaving the station there were some large groups arriving for a fun weekend.

Room Tip: Request a superior room when booking

Perfectly situated to explore Newcastle. Clean, bright rooms and very willing and helpful staff. Newcastle is a party town so could be noisy, but our Sun and Mon night stay was fine. Some problems with lift and shower but nothing that staff couldn't help us with. Would go again and recommend to others.

I had two reasons for booking this hotel. Very cheap (£90 for 2 nights) and near to the Quayside. For my £45 a night I got a decent sized twin room which was clean (though a little dated) with comfortable beds. The bathroom consisted of a shower which was on the mouldy side with very low pressure. The toilet was so close to the wall and sink that any visit was a challenge.. If I had no right leg it would have been ideal...

In my visit the reception staff were friendly and helpful.

All in all it's a hotel that's basic, a little dated, but dirt cheap. To note the multi-story car park at the rear of the hotel is free from 5pm through 8am. It is closed and secure from midnight through to 7am so is extremely handy. Daytime parking isn't cheap which is the norm for Newcastle.

It's a good base for the Quayside, the theatre, pubs & restuarants which is probably why other reviewers have complained about the noise at weekends.Take earplugs, or get out and join them, and you'll be fine.

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms probably best option.
