Been here three times when walking in the area and it's difficult to find fault: the home-brewed ale is always good and the freshly prepared food is also first-rate and not overpricey.
On our previous visit the restaurant coped admirably with our party of eight walkers and this week they managed to feed and water sixteen of us even though we were over half an hour late in arriving after our walk.
We did have a bit of a wait for our meal but what else would you expect when 16 arrive and order food? It was worth waiting for and the service from the ladies is always efficient - nothing is too much trouble.
If you're an outdoor type, park the car at High House, do the walking - there's a 3-mile and a 5-mile circuit which are both comfortable walks and there's scope for longer circuits - then return to a beer and a meal. Can't be beaten. The roads around Matfen are relatively quiet and flat so there are possibilities for cyclists too!
Our rambling club has made three visits now and I'm definitely planning another which incorporates High House.

We had an overnight stop in our motorhome, and availed ourselves of the shop and facilities.
We had a fine country walk in the evening. There is a bar and restaurant which was just closing at 17.00 on a Monday. They had been busy at the weekend when they have longer opening hours. Prices on the menu seemed reasonable.

Went for a meal one evening after stumbling across the brewery on the internet.
The brewery has a bar area in the centre and two rooms for eating either side of it. On a cold winter night, we were the only guests but were greeted with a warm welcome, Ordered drinks at the bar and then seated ourselves at a table.
The menu isn't extensive but it has a wide enough choice for most tastes i believe. We choose fish pie and cottage pie which were both a good size and tasty. Service was friendly and quick.. Prices are very reasonable and we will be going back to try the sunday lunches

We visited the high House farm Brewery on my birthday. What a treat. the beer is brewed at the farm, you can have a quick tour and view the brewery. there's a bar for sampling the different ales available. Five of us went for lunch, two pensioners, two adults and my son who's nine. The menu was small but very variedwith good choice. there was also a specials board. There were 5 special's I think, ranging from caserole, curry, a rice dish. All easy to prepare in large quanties. All cost £5.25 including tea or coffee. not bad for value you may think, until you see the portions, WOW! The food was served on large plates with plenty of what we ordered then a large dish with a varied selection of vegetables arrived for all to share, very well cooked, no watery or limp veg. I washed mine down with every beer available. You have to try them all really and my favourite was Matfen Magic. The service was also very pleasant, everyone was so helpful and polite. The only down side was we returned two days later to discover they weren't do the specials.

We have visited and brought many people to this venue but never again!
After waiting more than 45 minutes for 2 sandwiches we dared to complain to Mr Scott who said he was the manager. There was no excuse or apology. He was rude, cynical and patronising and even sarcastically declared that customer service is not one of his strong points! Our money was thrown back at us and we were sent packing with a flea in our ear and amongst other obscenities told to p... off!
It was an embarrassing and disappointing experience - we will not be going back
