Description: Happiness Inn opened its doors over forty years ago, Newcastle upon Tynes very first Oriental restaurant, and still one of its very best. In fact, ask any local if theyve ever been to the Happiness Inn and theyre bound to answer with a resounding of course! The blend of un-sullied Chinese cuisine and lovely service from professional, friendly staff are what makes the Inn such a success with the relatively recent makeover adding a touch of contemporary gleam to proceedings but doing nothing to change the welcoming, homely atmosphere that so pleases the regulars. Generous portions of authentic Chinese favourites are priced very well at the Happiness Inn, the set menus providing even better value for money than a la carte dining and every single one of your favourite dishes on the extensive menu. Chefs here follow old recipes, eschewing MSG and minimising salt and oil for a natural and healthy take on Oriental food. Facing the busy Percy Street, centrally located, the Happiness Inn is perfect for post-shopping dining on the hoof or an affordable evening meal.

“Marked improvement in its decor to match its food.”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Last time I reviewed this restaurant I gave a negative review of its untidy decor with unhoovered carpets and the dated decor. The food was never a doubt- good value and very tasty. Seems they have taken my comments to light and have given the place a subtle makeover: new carpets, walls, a cleaner entrance all the more inviting. Also more lights to give the place a more livelier ambience from the dingy past.
No better place for decent, traditional chinese food, not the buffet rubbish that litters Stowel Street. Bare in mind Dim Sum's are only served during the day. Only order chinese food, not your western take away style food which no chinese customer would order. The staff were attentative but they gave a impression of misery in their expressions- a smile could do wonders.

“Dreadful place”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

This was the second time i have visited this establishment and although the first time was ok-ish, i certainly will NOT be visiting again. The restaurant is dated and definitely in need of a good clean/update (would hate to see the kitchen) and the food is ok, but far from the best in Newcastle. The worst part is the service and in particular the treatment from one particular member of the waiting staff. We were treated very poorly from the outset in terms of service, and this continued to get worse as the night went on, with offensive comments coming from the waiter. We were a party of 16 and spending a LOT of money on food and drinks and should have been treated with a bit of respect and decency, but we weren't. Beware when paying, no student discount unless you are all students, they wouldn't apply a discount to those who were students and the lest the rest of us pay the full amount, and also they wouldn't let us pay on two cards. On asking to see the manager, we were told that the manager had gone home (though the waiter had only just gone to see the "manager" to ask if they could go against the "policy" and let us pay on two cards). We were told we could go back and see the manager the next day though! Oh and even though the restaurant closes at 23.30 as displayed on many websites, we were told the kitchen closed at 10 pm - on a Friday night in the city centre of Newcastle! Another lie from this vile, obnoxious and downright offensive "waiter". To top things off, when we had asked for the bill and had the discussion about the discount, he even had the nerve to come back and throw a lollipop down and across the table (which still hadn't been cleared of plates, food etc) to my friend as a 'thankyou' for organising the booking. This person deserves to be sacked after the treatment he displayed.

“Rude and Obnoxious Waiter”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

The food was OK here, but the waiter very rude, and refused outright to bring the manager when we asked to complain. With so many other good Chinese restaurants in Newcastle, why would you go to one where you aren't treated well?

“the most awful experience”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

This was the first time I had ever been treated this way in a restaurant. The waitor was rude from the beggining to the end with unpleasant comments everytime someone at the table was asking for something. They offer a student discount but you discover at the end that if at the table not everybody is a student you cannot benefit from this discount. So why mentionning student discount? You also discover at the end that you cannot be two persons to pay by card from the same table. How do you do if you don't have cash? These policies are written in chinese in the restaurant but as an European how can you know? I was chocked by the rudeness of the waitor and to be treated like "vermin" when I am, actually, the customer.
