“Believe the previous reviews”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

Heard a few people talking about this place so decided to try it out. Before leaving read the reviews on tripadvisor first. I took the reviews with a pinch of salt but have to say that they are all true.

It was a Friday night, 7.30pm booking so was already expecting it to be busy. We were shown to the table as soon as we walked in. The first thing is that the tables are literally filling every space. We booked a table for 2 but it felt like we were in the middle of a table of 8, packed together! The terrible service then began. It appears as though they have one waiter between about 20 tables, he is then supported by serving staff and kitchen staff who deliver the food. The waiter was poorly organised so as soon as the table filled up the breakdown started. We received food that wasn't ours, waited for ages with dirty plates waiting to be cleared away and virtually had to stand and wave my hands to get his attention to order another drink. We also asked 3 times for the bill.

As for the food, that was also poor and the main reason we'll not be going back. I had one of the chefs specials and my wife had a regular curry. Both lacked flavour and spice and were swimming in grease.

“Disgrace”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

We decided to try Akbars following a shopping trip to Newcastle having previously visited Akbars in Leeds and York. We hadn't booked but as it was early didn't think we would have any problems getting a table. We were shown to a table beside a young wheelchair bound disabled lad of about 18 who was out on his own and striving to have a bit of independance. I was astonished at how this young lad was treated by the staff. He was treated nothing short of being a second class citizen. They questioned his age even though he had valid id. When food arrived it was put out of his reach so he had to ask for someone to bring it closer. His courses were virtually brought to the table before he had the chance to finish the one previous almost as if they wanted to hurry him through his meal so that they could get him out! He even took a call at the table from no doubt a friend or relative to find out how his experience was going and it was terrible to hear him express that things couldnt be going worse. Come on Akbars your staff really need to raise their game...this pleasant and polite young lad must have really felt as if his independance was being questioned as they ushered him out of an emergency exit!
On the matter of our food...our starter was ok but the main course tasteless and bland. When I told our waiter that the dish was bland he agreed to change it...the floor manager questioned my expression that the dish was bland...anyway a few minutes later a replacement dish arrived at the table...equally as bland as the first!
During our stay my wife needed to use the loo and had to inform the staff that one of the loos was flooded and another out of paper.
Needless to say we wont be rushing back and sincerely hope the young lad we sat opposite hasn't had his confidence knocked by his experience.

“very let down”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

I will start by saying we were really looking forward to this meal as we had read the reviews and expected a very nice meal and service. How wrong we were it was supposed to be a special night as we had booked this well in advance for my birthday and our anniversary. We were shown to our table which was crammed in very close to other customers,so there was no privacy. The waiter brought us some pickles and pompadoms which were very bitter tasting( worst we have ever had). The nan bread with our main course was uncooked you could taste the dough,it was supposed to be fruit and nut it was just a plain nan ,Our mains were very average.there doesn't seem to any organisation between the waiters we noticed on several occasions taking the wrong food or drinks to the wrong tables.Half way through our meal the waiter asked if we were there for a special occasion after telling him he did not seem interested. From sitting down to leaving it was a total of forty minutes, just felt like they wanted to get you in and out as quickly as possible.Needless to say we will not be back.We did not complain because it just seemed like a production line ,that everyone was happy to go along with.

“What Joke of a restaurant”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

Had a meal last night to celebrate our Anniversary absolute joke of a restaurant sorry but gonna be honest. Booked a table for 8pm Saturday night 2 weeks in adavance as new would be busy, had to ring ahead as was running 10 minutes late, the girl organising the tables wasn't fit to do the job she said its fine come when you can which is fine we thought we'll still get our table with maybe a slight delay so was expected but as soon as we walked in she literally messed up everyones bookings or seatings which the manager had to sort out she was just standing there clicking a pen told us it wont be long to seat us 45 minutes later still not seated.

Then eventually got shown to our seat feeling like we couldn't order a full meal of starter and main cause felt we would of still been there now waiting for it. The service was dreadful 6 times chefs came over and waiters asking if we had ordered this and that even in the middle of the main course I spent more time saying no to waiters and chefs than speaking to my girlfriend it was a joke honestly. Don't even get me started on the food it was like heated up Sainsburys Tikka chicken Masarla and uncle Bens rice was shocking to say the least I havn't stopped passing wind and had a few trips to the loo since.

Can safely say will definitely not be returning, think the manager should get rid of the girl on the front desk cause she didn't even speak to us on the way out or apologise just stood there clicking her pen, felt like getting up and walking out without paying, the staff arn't trained properly and should be put on a customer service course, even had to ask for serviettes before we started.

I repeat don't eat here much better Indian restaurants about, its a shame and as I finish this the toilet calls again.
