“A city hotel built in the railway era tradition”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

This hotel has magnificent architecture and is designed and built in the traditional Victorian railway tradition.
The entrance hall is served by a magnificent flight of steps to the reception desk. Whilst some locations are in need of repair the internal decorations are quite impressive.
Staff on reception, in the bar and in the restaurant are helpful and friendly. Breakfast is buffet style and substantial and the choice of evening meal is adequate.
Conference facilities on the ground floor were good.
Unfortunately this hotel does not have air conditioning! The sash window in my bedroom would not stay open and this made the temperature an uncomfortable eighty four degrees the discomfort could not be mitigated by a small electric fan provided by reception.
The hotel has free Wi Fi and is conveniently located next to the main line railway station.
Peter Richardson.

Room Tip: Rooms directly served by a lift if you do not want to carry heavy luggage up or down the split level...

I have just had another week in this hotel and have been using it for the past 7 years on a previous stay my wife on returning from Scotland stayed the night resulting in a £30 charge. This stay I approached reception and asked if I would be charged if she was to stop off a night. The charming and helpful recognising my loyalty to the hotel added her for a couple of night FOC. I now have full faith back in the hotel and feel that my custom is appreciated and will be happy to continue to return here.
The food is excellent and all the staff from receptionist through to cleaners are charming and very friendly. The rooms are very well equipped with fridge with fee orange juice, water and kit-kats also hair drier, iron and ironing board, and always spotlessly clean.

Room Tip: I tend to ask for street facing rooms which can be a little noisier but cooler in hot weather

Stayed on a Friday night. Stayed here 3 years ago on a Sat night and the experience was not great. I can confirm it has improved LOADS since then. The entrance hallway is very grand, reception staff very welcoming. Room itself was a 'small double', but there was plenty of room for storage, setting out my case etc. Bathroom was huge and very clean. Only niggle was a tissue left on the floor which should really have been spotted by housekeeping. The hotel could really benefit from air con in summer - my room was stuffy as it had been hot all day. However the window did open to allow some air in. I believe that there were fans available as well. My room was 340 which faced onto the railway platforms. It was reasonably quiet and certainly didn't disrupt my sleep. The next day I visited the leisure club facilities which were excellent. Good sized gym, plenty of cardio machines and weights, tunes pumping in the background, fab. Swimming pool is a great, had it all to myself, there is also a hot spa bath, sauna room, steam room and cold plunge pool. Good shower facilities and hairdryers are provided. Really enjoyed my time at the hotel and would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room if you are a light sleeper. I'd imagine that rooms that overlook Neville S...

From the moment you enter the RSH you can only be impressed in a BIG way.
We have stayed here before & the impression never leaves you,the fantastic wide twisiting staircase & chandeliers is something really to admire.Further into the hotel the corridors with there utter charm of oldie worldie & modern art decor, the rooms are fantastic with bathrooms just as fantastic.
We spent12 days here recently(June-July) &enjoyed every moment, the staff are brilliant, the rooms are cleaned to a tip top standard, the service in the restuarant is also 10/10,food,well try there fish &chips WOW,the rest of the menu is also very good.
As for the location it is perfect for EVERYTHING you are in the middle of the CITY with trains, buses & the METRO direct to the airport, plus the pulsating night life on the doorstep.
My wife & i will most certainly bemaking a return visit to this LOVELY HOTEL.

Room Tip: As the hotel is smack bang in the heart of Newcastle you cannot expect to find all rooms quite,so in...

I stayed to this hotel this weekend 13?07/13. I am a regular customer,i have stayed 3 times the past two months! This time was the worst of all, and made me think if i will ever stay in this hotel again! Saturday night after a night out i went back to the hotel with my brother and the doorman did not let us in. My brother was really happy to provide ID but the doorman, never let us up! I can understand that its his job, but i think he could use his desecration, since im a regular customer and i have never ever caused a problem!
Sunday morning was the icing on the cake! I had the,'do not disturb sign' on my door and firstly i got a call and asked if i wanted my room cleaned, which does not make sense since i didnt wana be disturbed. Secondly it was the noise the cleaning stuff made when they were cleaning the rooms near mine. It was as if they had a contest who would be the loudest.
I dont know if it has to do something with the fourth floor but all the times i have stayed on the fourth floor, the experience was really poor!
After this experience i will think twice before booking again!

Room Tip: Stay away from the fourth floor

A truly beautiful old building with grandiose staircase and chandeliers. Large rooms, tasteful contemporary decor and whopping bathrooms. Only thing is noise from other rooms. We were next to a group of Irish who returned to their room at 3am! At one point I thought the walls were made of cardboard the noise was so unsettling. Don't let this put u off tho. With a few tweeks I.e. a room at the back of the hotel away from potential Sat nt revellers might easily do the job! A great building that's left a lasting positive impression overall! A/C wud b a big plus for these hot July night's or at the very least a fan

Room Tip: Insist on room with a bath. They're huge!
