“Needs refurbishment”

Like other reviews we found our room cold and survived with an oil fired heater. We were told we had received a complimentary upgrade for a room overlooking the river. Unfortunately it also smelled of smoke and the train and metro line could be heard until late at night and from around 5 in the morning. Our room, while spacious, was tired and had seen better days. We only had one towel and rang down for another one, which never came. Upon checking out we were told we had to pay for the upgrade at which point we were a little miffed. However, the staff after our explanations, did waive the upgrade fee.

On the plus point, the staff on the desk were helpful (despite the lack of towels) and I did feel sorry for them because it was cold and I felt they were trying their best. I didn't feel the hotel was worth the money that we paid.

Room Tip: While it is nice to have a river view you do have to contend with the noise of the train lines. Pro...

I stayed on business for 3 nights in January 2013...The staff are friendly and it seems working under extreme conditions. I had stayed last year (2012) and they were advertising that they were renovating the hotel from the top down...obviously it hadn't reach my room yet...There was no heating in the room (except for a small oil filled radiator). The balcony door did not close properly and allowed the cold air off of the Tyne into the room. There was no remote for the TV and it took 90 mins to get me a replacement...All in all...very shoddy !! And why haven't the hotel management addressed any of these comments posted in the past few week !!!

Room Tip: Find another hotel...at least until there is a mark improvement in these reviews.

Stayed here in January 2012, and all I can say is it was cold! The heating in the entire hotel appeared not to be working. The lobby was freezing and the poor reception staff were huddled around a heater in the back room, only coming away from it to deal with guests.
The rooms were equally as cold. No heating and a mobile electric radiator was provided in the room for heat, although it didn't really work. To warm up I decided to hit the sauna etc (part of teh reason I decided to stay here), but I was told that the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi were not working.
The staff at the hotel were really nice and chatty. They advised that the heating problem had been going on for some months and appeared embarresed about.
The rooms were tired and in a need of a revamp. They still had old bulky TV's which I guess were put in when the hotel first opened.
All in all I was disappointed. I remember when the hotel opened and it was impressive. Its really gone downhill (apart from the staff). I would not recommend staying here, if you have to, check if the heating is working first!

I have stayed at this hotel on a few occasions and have never been dissapointed with the service.
For the last 2 years we have held our work christmas party here, the food was lovely and the service fantastic, we had the party's booked on one of the busiest weekends of the year, all the function rooms were full but the food was fresh, hot and tasty.
The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the night (and the DJ more than accomodating of our party song requests). The rooms are clean and airey with no complaints from any of our party. The buffet breakfast in the morning was lovely with attentive waiting staff in the breakfast room. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this hotel.

I must say it has been a very long time since I have stayed in a hotel that you are not sweating your socks off ... this hotel is quiet the opposite.. it was freezing ! the room heating system didn't seem to be working and we had a tiny oil radiator instead ! I am sorry but I don't expect this in a 4 star hotel.
The general appearance was slightly tired especially so in the dining room.
The bar was over priced and the wine was cheap and nasty ! on the positive side the staff where very friendly and it was easy to get in to town and the room had a nice view of the river.
Overall I would not stay again and would not recommend to a friend.

stayed here in jan 2013 room number 125 i stayed here about 10 years ago and i was so impressed .
my how times have changed the basic hotel is still the same but it very tired the heating wasnt working properly in the room it still had the old fashioned tv in place the bed was very soft with springs sticking in your back such a shame as the views from the tyne side rooms are great the location is great as well .shower is good and the room was well appointed , had a few drinks in the bar and it was not a rip off like many other top end hotels just needs some tender loving care abringing into the 21st century with wifi and all that with its faults i would still go back .the staff were very good indeed but as a guest i could not quite get paying £5 per night for using the car park

Room Tip: ask for a river side view

Arranged secret 60th Birthday for my wife with 40family and friends attending. Staff at the Copthorne were fantastic both the organisation leading up to the even and the event itself. Food was excellent and the satff made sure everyone had a great time. Most guests stayed over and there were no complaints from anyone. Yes the hotel does need a bit of "tarting up" in places but it was clean and the service was first class. Nothing was ro much trouble.
