“Return Home!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2013

Returned to my beloved Newcastle for a Xmas do all the way from Barnsley.
This was our first stay in the Vermont and we will return because we are led to believe the rooms are to undergo renovation, yes a bit dated but a good nights sleep and worth the money with breakfast included.
The staff were great and service etc in the lovely reception and bar area was good next to the fireplace.
There is also a roof top bar with great views to be had especially in the warmer weather when we shall return.
Nearly forgot, free parking which a lot of the others do not have and really close to the centre.

Good stay here, great location, central for everything we wanted to do, quiet and clean. Lovely breakfast in the morning and nice ambiance in the bar. Only gripe is there were more door staff than bar staff, and the bar person had a miserable face on her like a wet weekend as she was under pressure from every wanting cocktails. Get at least another bar person on there, preferable one who smiles and you'll do all right.

Great location, free parking, good food and luxurious bar area. Service excellent. Rooms are a still a little dated (spotless clean) but I imagine these are next on the agenda for an update (flat screen TVs fitted since my last visit). It's not your bog standard chain hotel and that's what I appreciate hence return visit booked for next week.

We stayed for two nights to visit our family and to do some shopping. This is a great hotel with an excellent central location. The staff were friendly and helpful especially the porter . There is an amazing view of the bridges as a bonus. Lovely views from Bridge restaurant, good food at reasonable prices.

The hotel have clearly invested in the reception, bar and dining areas and not bothered to update the rooms since the 80's. The room was awful, peeling wallpaper, awful decor, dirty carpets and cheap dated bathroom. We had to call the porter at 2am as we couldn't sleep due to the heating making so much noise. The staff were all lovely and the breakfast was good too. Such a shame that there is no investment in the accommodation. I find the owners ferrari and rolls royce at the front of the hotel a bit offensive when there clearly has been no investment in the rooms in 20 years.

Room Tip: maybe the other floors are better but the 10th floor was grim

We visited here as a mixed group of my daughter and friends for her 18th birthday and three "grown ups". It was really a lovely surprise, staff couldnt have been more friendly, the quality and cleanliness of the rooms were great and the price a joy. You cannot beat the location and it has a lovely air of sophistication. We loved our stay and will be back.

Room Tip: try to get one with a view of the Tyne

Stayed here for 2 nights recently. Reception rooms bar and restaurant tastefully decorated. I'm afraid to say nothing else was up to standard. The bedrooms are really run down shabby torn wallpaper, t.v's from the 70's, mismatched beds. The central heating didn't work on the coldest night of the year. Toilet wouldn't flush. Had to move to another room on 2nd night which took an age to heat up.
We were booked in for dinner only us and 1 other table in restaurant which gave us a bad feeling as it was a Saturday night and most good restaurants are booked out on a Saturday. The table d'hôte menu was poor so went for a la carte. Starter was dreadful soggy lettuce and crayfish tails with a teaspoon of Marie Rose sauce, we were offered bread from a basket .. what a joke no nice rolls or slice of bread it was a small mouthful of hard stale end of loaf. Staff were unhelpful when they were around they must have spent most of the night in the kitchen as they were only around to bring the food and disappeared again. We never ordered dessert or any more drinks as got fed up waiting for staff. Went to the bar for coffee. Bar looked nice but was chilly nice big coal fire unlit and grand piano but nobody playing it!!! No atmosphere and about 6 customers including us.
Breakfast was also cold so were breakfast staff had to wait around to be seated, although restaurant not busy waited around also for bacon and had to ask for tea and toast on both mornings also had to get condiments from another table as disappearing staff did not put any in our table got tea eventually and bread not toasted but at least it was a proper slice.
We were not impressed by the standard of this hotel. The dining experience is sadly lacking and I assume the people of Newcastle are not impressed or the restaurant would have been a lot busier. I did write directly to the Management about our experience but sadly never heard anything back. I also assume the guest experience doesn't really matter.
