“Old fashioned and dated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

If I could do a 2.5 rating I would. Premier inn gets a 3 and I'm sorry to say this old lady is now lacking. The Vermont back in the day was THE PLACE to stay in THE TOON. Location is still 10 out of 10. The rooms are old and weary. They need a make over. I can go stay with my mum and she's "geet auld" if I want an old fashioned dated gold bed room. The decor is old and .... well it's old, very dated and even MY MUM doesn't have that anymore - she's over 80 now.

I want something nice for the rates and iT DOESN'T HAPPEN. I get faux posh pretentious stuff from 30 years ago.

Location is brilliant the beds are almost faultless for a good kip but the decor is so ....... well I was expecting to wake up with a geezer painting the room. Hell I'd have grabbed a roller or brush and helped him.

It;s a lovely hotel in the best location but all the rooms need an update.

I feel this hotel is resting too much on it's laurels. It must do better - starting with a paint palet.

Staff are great and very helpful but when you are in your time locked room ....well... it's a bit...

We had a great stay here but the decor .... well as my daughter says ... "REALLY?"

"20 or 30 years ago I would have been made up but The Vermont seems to be locked back 20 years in a bad way.

Get the paint out and update the rooms please.

Room Tip: Major renovation needed.

My wife and I stayed at the Vermont on May 9th as we were going to watch the darts at Newcastle Arena. We eventually got parked after someone moved their car then entered the hotel to check in expecting our luggage to be brought in or to be shown to our room. However, we were just handed the room key and told "your room is on the tenth floor". After carrying our own bags up to the room we found that the room was a decent size and clean but we were disappointed as the decor and fittings are very aged. The tv looked like it was bought when the hotel was built! The following morning the welcome pack said that breakfast was served on the 6th floor. However, when we got there and walked around aimlessly, a hotel guest told us that the breakfast room was being refurbished and we now had to go to the 3rd floor. The breakfast was awful! Everything was low quality cheap ingredients, cold and there was no structure to the self service. By the time we had sat and ate a few pieces of fatty bacon and were about to leave, we were eventually asked if we would like tea or coffee. We quickly left, picked up our luggage and went to check out. However, we had to wait until the person in front of us had made an official complaint about breakfast to the receptionist. The hotel is in a great location but unfortunately that's where the positives end.

Having read other reviews we were a bit reluctant to stay here and hubby even wanted to change to different hotel the day before but we didnt. After an initial mix-up with our allocated room, we were upgraded to a junior suite and I have to say we were pleasantly surprised. I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are a bit dated but it was more than adequate for the price we paid which included breakfast! Good central location but ask for a room overlooking the Tyne and not the railway. One thing to mention is that breakfast is only served until 0930 on a weekday but they will serve it as room service until 11. Some of the public rooms have already been renovated and look great, very plush! If they upgrade the bedrooms to the same standard it will be a fantastic place to stay. Overall, I would recommend this hotel for good value and friendly staff, and we will definitely stay here again.

Just arrived back after 2 fantastic nights celebrating our 27 th wedding anniversary. when we arrived we were greeted by two lovely pleasant girls on reception (Natasha & Rhona) When we said that we were celebrating our anniversary they not only upgraded us to their best suite but they sent a bottle of bubbly up to our room ! We were so impressed by the beautiful room and fantastic staff that we turned our 1 night stay to a 2 night stay. I cannot complement this hotel enough, from the lovely comfortable beds the fantastic friendly staff and the wonderful food! I cannot wait for our next stay at the Vermont! If anyone is thinking of staying in Newcastle do yourselves a favour and stay at the Vermont! It will be the only hotel in Newcastle that we will be staying at from now on. As for Rhona & Natasha thank you girls for everything & you both are a credit to the hotel!!!

Room Tip: Suites are very large and comfortable

The Vermont Hotel is in a great location, close to historic centre. The staff is very attentive and kind. Check in and check out very fast. At guests disposal there are two car parks. Good food. Excellent value for money.

Nice hotel, has own character and central location, very close to historic centre, the Sage and bars. Cosy bar and restaurant with good selection of food for reasonable price and excellent and attentative staff. We were served by Petra, she was very pleasant and helped us to feel comfortable and special even next day at the reception.
I would definitelly reccomend this hotel for excellent service we received and all atmosphere it has.

The Vermont is arguably one of the landmarks of Newcastle, being set in an imposing building next to Castle Keep, and ideally located for bars and restaurants on the Quayside.

The City Room we booked was a reasonable size comfortable and clean, but rather dated in terms of decor and furnishings - as is much of the hotel. The main lobby is lovely, and the concierge very helpful in parking the car for us. The hotel bar downstairs is very lively and popular with locals too, so you will certainly wish to pop in. With so many restaurants on the doorstep we ate out, but the hotel menu looked very appealing.

Only one of the two lifts was working during our stay, and with more than ten floors this meant we had to wait a while sometimes before we could squeeze into a lift.

Free wi-fi was a bonus.

Access to the car-park is tricky, as you need to head toward the high-level bridge (which is closed to cars). We had to go into the hotel to get directions. If you're a wheelchair user this isn't the easiest hotel to access either.

Overall, a pleasant hotel that's in need of updating. We'd have been disappointed if I'd paid the full rate for our stay.
