The Vermont Hotel
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We have stayed on a good deal before at the Vermont but this time we were well impressed with the inviting and new decor in the reception and bar areas truly stunning. However the decor and updating should continue into the guest bedrooms. Our room on the 9th floor which had a great view over the tyne bridge was tired in decor with a wardrobe that needed adjustment to the door and our friends had heating that would have given Kew gardens a run for its money, they rang to ask for help and was assured it would go off at 11pm but at 3am they still were cooking. The TV was of an old style and the whole room dated but It was clean and comfortable and the hotel well situated to walk into the city. The breakfast excellent as were the staff A big bonus free carparking and we will stay there again.

Room Tip: Avoid room 809 unless the heating has been fixed

We have just enjoyed a truly wonderful one night stay at a hotel that clearly values people. All the staff we met were outstanding and they could not have done more to make this a fantastic stay. The room had wonderful views and the traditional nature of the room actually made a refreshing change. The newly refurbished lounge and bar area is stunning. We will stay here on our next visit. Thankyou to all!

Room Tip: Seriously consider this hotel!

We stayed for a couple of nights at the end of March and felt that the buffet breakfast and the free parking were definite pluses. The reception and bar appear to have been refurbished recently and were very comfortable, but the bar service was variable and the unavailability of Baileys, for instance, surprising. Our bedroom was very average for the price, with what seemed like a three-quarter sized bed, with only one bed-side table and one lamp. The single wardrobe was adequate, but not generous. The bathroom would have been excellent if only the cold tap on the the sink was working - hotel staff were unable to address the difficulty on two separate occasions. Reception staff and concierge friendly and helpful, as was the bar manageress. Location close to city centre and quayside was excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the railway line.

We stayed here for 3 nights over Easter. The hotel was really well located, being just a short walk up into the city centre, Situated right next to the castle itself, and within a stones throw of St Nicholas Cathedral. Hotel has its own car park which was free of charge. When we arrived home one evening there was no parking space, but the concierge came to our rescue and parked it for us. The breakfast is plentiful, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much bother for them. The room was comfortable and clean. Would definitely stay again.

Stayed at The Vermont with my two children last night and it was a lovely experience all round (except perhaps the parking...) - grand, old-fashioned in a good way, relaxed, good service, with a fantastic view from our room over the Tyne & Millennium bridges and the Sage Centre. Check the low-cost room-finder sites when booking as we got a very good deal. Will stay there again.

We stayed here for 2 nights when we came down for the opera. We also got a good deal through Superbreaks. Our room was really spacious and quiet. The bath (oh joy of joys) filled in 90 seconds (they even put a sign up to warn you!). I know the hotel is going under renovation but I actually quite like the old style hotels. What was missing was - 2 mini bottles of wine and water do not constitute a mini bar and the bar in the restaurant seemed to only sell wine. The reception was temporarily in the restaurant and the entrance hall really was more like the entrance to a French apartment building with concierge. I also wanted to book a massage and had to wander around the basement to find her. Eventually I was told the therapist was temporarily using the conference room (said as if I should know!). However these are minor quibbles and related to the fact there are some temporary service arrangements within the hotel. The staff were pleasant and breakfast quite good - great views of famous bridge from dining room. I would stay again for a weekend break and a great plus was free parking at the hotel.

I wish this place would invest in its rooms as apart from being dated you can't fault this hotel. The staff are first class and make you feel welcome and are very helpful. The location is excellent with a lift taking you down to the quay side. It can get a bit noisy at night with metro trains etc but that can be said for many other hotels in Newcastle. Parking is free. Breakfast is lovely.
