“Nice hotel but the staff don't tell you everything”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

We stayed in here after a night out, the hotel was lovely & quiet! Really nice rooms and really nice reception - the food isn't very good but there is tesco and mcdonalds a short walk away. Loved our stay but when i've called to rebook i've been told that last time we had got bed & breakfast room booked, at the time when we asked about breakfast we were told it would be £13.95?? So naturally we refused and walked to Tesco and had a beautiful breakfast + drink for £4.95 :-) Obviously if the staff would have been truthful we would have just had the breakfast there seen as we were already entitled to it. We were told it was going to be £40+ in a taxi to the town centre (by a friend not staff) but it wasn't it was only about £15 :D It was £6 or something to park overnight, this didn't really bother me. I was calling to rebook but definitely will not after I found they conned us all. Too bad as we were going to book 7 rooms like last time - we won't be doing that now!

An online booking that was almost sneered at by the receptionist, who handed over two fortune cookies with a 10% re-booking voucher like a rapping of the knuckles! Mumbled something about breakfast – I am sure I heard, “book by midnight or it will cost you £39 in the morning”? Prior to booking had checked about the taxi service, but the assured 10 minutes stretched out to 30, with little action to resolve.
Lounge area was rather strange: Massive, but uninviting with very few tables and comfortable chairs.
Room was spacious, well-appointed, clean and comfortable.
Tried to get out in the morning but held to ransom for a £5 charge for overnight parking (with abundant spaces) – that wasn’t explained during check-in; so beware, a ‘good deal’ can be an opportunity to catch you out with add-ons!

Stayed one night.
Rooms are clean, bed was comfortable.
Requested room away from A1 as advised - quiet.
Cannot complain about anything.
Agree with other comments about car parking charges - don't know why this is not just included in price!
Hotel in good location.
Shopping area just down the road - large Tesco, Greggs for breakfast if you don't want to pay the £13 for breakfast at the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for room not facing A1.

With this being an 'airport' hotel I expected this to be a much less pleasant experience than it actually was. The hotel itself is easy to find and sufficiently far enough from the airport that you are not disturbed by flight noise. That said there was a lot of motorway noise coming from the A1 but the windows did a good job of blocking this out.

The nicest surprise about the hotel were the gardens/grounds at the rear. We were lucky enough to be there on a warm evening and sat outside to have a drink which was really nice. There's even a small play area for kids.

The room was in the old Novotel style and is perfectly functional and clean, it just lacks that extra something that the recent refurbs have given them. Ours was a room for 3 as we were travelling with a teenager and it was roomy enough so that we didn't feel crammed in.

Breakfast is as good as it would be usually anywhere else although I was surprised that there was no black pudding given that we were in the North East! The staff were clearing tables quickly and dealing with the usual array of unreasonable guests with good grace.

Location wise it's good for quick access down to the Metro Centre and isn't far at all from the city centre or airport either. We opted to go down to the Swalwell TGI Friday's for a meal and that isn't far to travel.

The main downside was the wait to check out. Given that it was a Bank Holiday Monday they had left one woman on her own to check everyone out. The queue was pretty long and if I had picked that hotel as it was close to the hotel then I'd be worried about long check out times.

The air conditioning was pretty poor as well, we slept all night with the window open as it was so warm. I am at the point of giving up on hotels that claim to offer it as it barely seems to work. We've found the A/C has been better at the much cheaper Ibis hotel so it makes you wonder why it's not so good at the more expensive hotels in their chain.

On the night we were there a wedding was taking place and this meant that access to the bar areas was a little difficult as the party had spread out of the function room. Also bar prices are expensive and I'm guessing this is because it hosts a lot of functions. £10.50 for three pints of diet cola is steep.

We would definitely stay again if we were travelling in the area.

Room Tip: Asking for a quiet room can get you moved away from function rooms but closer to motorway noise - be...

We stayed in this hotel on our return from Turkey, the hotel was very nice and was clean but when we arrived in our room it was only set up as a room for two and as we were travelling as a family of three we had to set up the sofa bed ourselves and although we did go and tell reception about this they made no attempt to send anyone to set up the sofa bed. I would also suggest that you do not book breakfast as it is quite expensive.
