“Excellent cakes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

Very good tea, coffee and cake.
It's a pity that they no longer sell bread which used to be wonderful.

“Greed is good - not”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

This was once maybe the best lunchtime spot in Newcastle, sadly no longer the case. The restructuring of the ground floor to create extra table space is a backward step(for the customer) and the removal of the marvelous bread counter shows quite clearly the change in focus - all quite sad really.

“The best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2013 via mobile

Ate on a Saturday lunch time and it was very busy. This did not stop the staff being helpful chatty and friendly. The food was excellent and the caramel cake was to die for. Will definitely be back soon evern just to eat the cake again

“Great foodie menu”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2013

Very busy cafe of weekends with a great foodie menu that will cater to everyone's needs. The fish cakes and Moroccan spiced lamb are definite recommendations. The lamb was beautifully tender and came with a spiced sausage (albeit that it looked like a terd).Unfortunately their coffee was terribly bitter, don't bother ordering one here.

“queing is obligatory”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

Very clean and attractive surroundings. Large selection of delicious pastries and very enjoyable coffee (particularly the Mocha). Attentive staff. Male toilets spotless.

Now the gripe...

Surely it cannot be beyond the ingenuity of Sir John Fitzgeralds management to realise that a Saturday lunchtime in the centre of the largest city within a 100 mile radius is going to be busy...and I do mean BUSY. Only one order till in operation being worked by an admittedly pleasant and efficient young lady is simply not acceptable. 15+ minutes to order and a further 10+ minutes waiting back at table for the goodies to be served (coffees and pastries with no cooking or heating involved) does nothing to add to an otherwise pleasant experience.

Sir John (or whoever)...More staff are needed. With two major Universities on the doorstep that cannot be too difficult to arrange...just offer to pay enough so that they don't have to work for about an hour to afford one of your cakes.
