Review of Kiln

Kiln
Ranked #187 of 1,426 Restaurants in Newcastle upon Tyne
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: $3 - $12
Description: Kiln is a bit of a project, we are a hard working bunch that has set up a cafe so that you can come and visit our ceramics studio. What we do is tableware for some of the best restaurants in the country, including locally Peace & Loaf, and House of Tides. We pride ourselves on our ceramics. We've set up small cafe & bar with a shoebox sized kitchen. We do simple food, with a group of guys with no commercial experience who just love to cook. We built everything you see, its a real family affair! The welding, joinery, design & idea is all us and there are plenty of rough edges. We hope to give you a really honest experience, its no frills but a big heart. Our staff are all chosen on their character and a lot are new to the industry. We believe that making mistakes is part of being human, so we have warm welcoming staff who will always have time for you and thoroughly enjoy developing a friendship. If you want an honest experience then we are the right place!

Popped in for tea tonight, love everything about the place, venue, atmosphere, staff, menu, coffee and cakes. Quirky, funky and unique venue.

Food was great and cannot be faulted. The problem was it took ages to arrive and the staff were not very flexible. If it's not on the menu forget it. It's like 'computer says no' when it comes to any form of adaptation to the menu. Staff will have to try a lot harder and be more flexible to get my business again

Essentially, this is a café/restaurant attached to a craft pottery. Instead of providing a small selection of substantial dishes, Kiln offers a wide selection of vegetarian tapas style dishes, recommending you have three plates each and share. I was invited there as a guest, and, as a committed, enthusiastic carnivore it was initially something of a shock to read the menu, and something of a disappointment to eat the only meat dish on the menu - koftas... hard and largely tasteless. I also ordered roast potatoes with a microscopic splash of sauce, and humus with sourdough, but I can't get excited about food like that.

The place was packed, so popular, and the décor/ambiance funky.

Visited for dinner with a friend. The service was excellent, as was the atmosphere. They have a great beer selection and there wine list is pretty good too! The food was small dishes to share which was great for us. I love this place.

An interesting experience at Kiln. We went for brunch on a Sunday morning, which got busy quite quickly. The menu is fairly average, including Mac and cheese and huevos rancheros, with some little twists along the way and a good selection for vegetarians (a bit more limited for vegans). On the whole the value was fairly good for this restaurant which is quite on trend with its modern industrial style. The staff were fairly aloof, and when asking whether one of the meals was the meat free or meat containing version we were told ‘not to get the staff in trouble’ and so were none the wiser - our vegetarian companion ended up having the lamb. Our water was topped up once and never again. The food was pretty good, nothing out of this world, but good portions and pretty damn tasty. The bread was delicious, although crispy to the point of causing mouth ulcers. There’s nothing particularly special about this restaurant in today’s dining scene, but they do the basics well. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again, but wouldn’t put up a fight if it was suggested we went back.
