Ive eaten in the restaurant on a number of occasions and have always liked the restaurant and the food but it is on the pricey side. I decided to try out their Sunday Brunch and I wasn’t let down. To start we had the tomato soup, followed by the “all you can eat” style market table which is split into two. On one side you have an assortment of seafood from prawns, mussels, oysters, trout, salmon.. on the other a selection of superb cured Serrano jamon pickles, preserves which quote frankly filled us both up. For the main you get a fantastic choice, I chose the rib of beef and my partner chose the Normandy chicken, both were excellent. To finish there (if you can stomach it) there is an assortment of deserts. Service was excellent, food was excellent, and for £20 you cant argue as the food on offer is top notch. Great for a special occasion or for a bit of over indulgence to wipe away a hangover!!

Stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights as a treat following our journey along Hadrian's cycleway. The service was great. The room was fantastic, stylish décor, huge comfortable bed and the best bit of all was the incredible view of the Tyne. Loved it. Everything else in the hotel was up to the usual high Hotel du Vin standard we had previously experienced in Bristol and Glasgow. We certainly felt our stay was a special treat and would definitely return and would definitely request the same amazing room.

Room Tip: Stayed in Torres on the third floor with fantastic views of the Tyne.

The staff are all friendly and our room was large with a terrace. We went to the restaurant twice. The staff were very friendly but the service very slow we had to wait each evening nearly three quarters of an hour for our starters. We were not very impressed with the food. Then on the Saturday night the whole place was taken over by a wedding. We had arranged to meet friends in the bar unaware that it was over crowded with the wedding guest.

Room Tip: Do not have a room over looking the terrace if there is a wedding on.

We stayed at Hotel Du Vin Newcastle on the nights of 25/26 July. The hotel is in an attractive and sympathetically restored steamship building just off the quayside. We usually frequent the H du V in Brighton. The staff in Newcastle couldn't have been nicer or more friendly, in particular Mark in reception and the ever present, always helpful manager, Graham. I had hurt my back and remembered at the last minute to request a walk in shower as I couldn't cope with a bath/shower entry. Mark quickly found something (after patiently guiding us in, as my Satnav was throwing a wobbly) but it was upstairs (no lift in this wing) and the room was a not in our opinion up to the usual H du V standard. With no question they upgraded us to a superior ground floor room/junior suite and ensured we were comfortable. This was definitely up to the usual standard! We ate in the Bistro both nights as we had friends visiting us and I had a very sore back! The scallops to start, were outstanding. In fact I ordered them on both nights. The main courses were average and the serving staff provincial. In fact the overall feel of the hotel is a little provincial but that is part of the charm! Much rather helpful, friendly, staff willing to cheerfully correct the odd problem than the cold, uncaring, attitude of most chains. I do feel that the Bistro needs some improvement and generally lets the hotel down. However the hotel staff were outstanding (a big thank you to Mark and Graham) and we look forward to returning. This will definitely be our regular hotel when in the area. I have previously stayed at The Hilton Gateshead (which has great views if you get a river view room) but is extremely expensive and not a patch on H d V in any way!

If you are familiar with the Hotel du Vin brand you won't be disappointed with the Newcastle hotel, set in a reclaimed old building near the waterside. It's not the best location, but not too bad. Good things: friendly welcome, lovely styling and lots of nice little touches that make it different such as fresh milk in the fridge, good meal and good service at dinner. Bad things: silly extra charges that are just irritating - £10 to park the car, no free biscuits so a £4 charge for the post-journey sugar hit in the form of a bag of chocolate buttons. Very slow service at breakfast.
Overall, a really nice place.
