“Unexpected breakfast treat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2014

We stumbled upon The Cherry Tree when looking for somewhere for an impromptu Sunday brunch. It wasn't busy (in fact we were the only table in) and the service was great. The breakfast selection isn't huge, but all 3 of us had different dishes and they were all delicious.

“Rude and arrogant manager”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2014

We thought we would give The Cherry Tree one third and final chance last night and truly wish we hadn't bothered. The first time we visited the restaurant was 21:35 on a Tuesday evening and we were told that the kitchen had closed at 21:30; we had a drink at the bar and left. On our second visit we were told, after we had ordered drinks at the bar and had been seated, that the only dishes left were crab linguine and a vegetarian dish. I don't think we have ever previously visited a restaurant at 21:00 on a Saturday evening where all but two dishes were sold out, particularly when the restaurant was no where near full but I digress, back to last night.

We were immediately seated at a table upstairs and first impressions were good, in fact very good; the French waitress was knowledgable, helpful and charming. She brought us our wine and olives and said the bread would follow shortly as it was being freshly baked in the oven. The two starters of scallops and tempura prawns were tasty and well executed. Unfortunately the part baked baguette arrived about 15 minutes after we had finished our starters.

The main course arrived soon after the bread and the duck was, as requested, pink, however, the same could not be said for the two morsels of venison which had been cooked within an inch of their life. After eventually catching the attention of one of the waitresses we explained we had asked for the venison to be served pink and it was completely over cooked. She immediately apologised and asked whether we wanted another venison. We asked for two duck as we were confident the chef was capable of cooking that pink; I had to ask for both plates to be taken away so we could eat together which was just as well as we had to wait over half an hour for the replacement dishes. Both dishes of duck were luke warm and chewy and I suspect one was the returned duck which had simply been re heated.

The most disappointing point of the evening was the arrival of the manager at our table who provided us with no apology and stated that he had inspected the venison in the kitchen and it was pink. He refused my request to bring the dish back to the table as he was clearly telling lies and his attitude was frankly disgraceful; it was clear the waitresses were embarrassed by their manager's behaviour. Needless to say we won't be visiting The Cherry Tree for a fourth time which is a shame as it has such potential and is right on our doorstep.

Sir,

I can assure you that the two duck breasts you received were both fresh, we take pride in our food and would never re-heat a dish 30 minutes after it was first served. This would also be obvious visually.

Now, I am aware that it is nearly impossible for a restaurant to come off well when dealing with a complaint in a public forum, but I must point out that it does seem that you have been quite negative in the past about a number of the northeast's higher calibre restaurants.

Any tripadvisors out there who have not visited us before will hopefully take time to read the rest of our reviews and rest assured that we are passionate about great food and great service.

This was my first visit to The Cherry Tree and really enjoyed it. The service was good and the food really tasty at a reasonable price. Definitely worth a return visit.

“Simply fabulous birthday meal ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2014 via mobile

Booked here for my mum's birthday, and from the moment we arrived it was simply excellent.

The dishes on the menu were carefully explained by the manager, Monika who also offered us some wine recommendations.

The good itself was delicious, cooked to our liking and with decent-sized portions.

All in all another great meal at the Cherry Tree where we were looked after incredibly well by all the excellent staff.
