“Don't understand why it's so popular!”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

We visited Blakes again today for the second time, after being disappointed the first we thought we'd give it a second chance. We ordered a lamb and mint melt and waited over 20 mins for it. When it arrived the insides were scalding hot and the lovely bun it was in at the counter was burnt to a crisp! If we hadn't waited so long for the first and been in a rush i'd have sent it back. Instead we definately won't be going back, the foods poor, coffee okay and toilets are scruffy!

“The worst way to start the day”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

We went Christmas shopping yesterday and were excited to treat ourselves to a breakfast. We decided to try Blakes for the first time - it will be the last. The place is in need of refurbishing. Dingy cramped and noisy. It's not obvious how you order food, menus don't exist and the black boards are dotted high and low. Choice is limited. We ordered a breakfast each. It's not clear you need to get your own cutlery and the help is none existent. The food was possibly the worst we've ever had. It was luke warm at best, greasy, terribly cooked and definitely not worth the money. We both left almost the whole meal and got out asap. I was poorly afterwards. Awful, a waste of money and such a disappointment.

“Blakes 04/12/12”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

Visited Blakes for the first time in over 10 years today and the food was good, coffee hot and indifferent service. Served by someone with pink hair, false eye lashes, tattoo on her hand and loads of makeup. Seemed OTT for working in a coffee shop to me. When I asked about soup, the lady just pointed upwards to a blackboard that I failed to spot without saying a word. Made me feel foolish.
You are served food without cutlery and you have to collect your own, I didn't know this when presented with a bowl of soup with no spoon. Noticed missing cover of light fittings and cupboard doors hanging off behind the counter. The toilets were on a lower level and the "Mens" were over heated and poorly ventilated. Believe the place is in need of a refurbishment if it wants to keep up with competition.

“Great Atmosphere, Food & Interior”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

I really like it here although you do have to overlook a few things such as the toilets and the breakfast porridge! The soulful 'vibe' and food make it worthwhile though.

“Nice atmosphere, good value but nothing exceptional”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

Relaxed and comfortable spot for a light lunch; food was only average to fine, but undoubtedly reasonably priced. Coffee was good but service somewhat slow - however it was very busy during our viist.
