“A Very Different Cathedral”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Guildford Cathedral is prominently situated on top of Stag Hill outside the City. You therefore have to make a special visit to see it but car parking is easy and free.
It is not particularly attractive outside but its interior is simple, bright and clutter free. It is very spacious.
We were singing with a choir for all the services over a weekend and acoustically it is stunning. At the moment the choir and High Altar area are covered with scaffolding while repairs are being undertaken but this did not detract from the experience. We sang in the nave.
There are also very few steps so disabled access is good.
There is a refectory available for food and drinks but it tends to close before services start.

“Unexpectedly beautiful and peaceful”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

Reasonable parking, food, shop and toilets, but the Cathedral itself is wonderful. Looks very austere and unpromising on the outside, but inside it's a modern masterpiece! The needlework on the kneelers and various other pieces around the interior is superb, the accoustics and sheer impact of the interior height and space are magnificent. Very friendly stewards, plenty to contemplate, and concerts there are well worth attending.

“The best location for a cathedral in England”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I always admire this Cathedral having driven past it many thousand times over the years. It is a simple, almost functional, design but this does not detract from the sense of awe from within or out - it is a large building, and has similarities with Tate Modern. It can't compare with the historic cathedrals but its simple brick construction is just right for the twentieth century. It is If approaching Guildford by road for the first time look out for it on its hill top setting on the left hand side driving from London on the A3, or from Farnham on the A31 (Hogs Back). It appears so small and yet a few moments later its full size is revealed as one passes by on the busy A3.

“Ugly on the outside, beautiful inside”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

If, like me, you think the outside is an abomination, try to resist your temptation to pass the cathedral by. The inside is well worth seeing, and it's somehow charming despite its size, rather like St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol.

If you go there for a concert, be aware that the seats aren't especially comfortable, and like many churches it isn't heated properly. The acoustics are OK, and although choral music sometimes lacks a little clarity because of the acoustics, a concert there makes a pleasant evening. The staff are very nice.
