“Very enjoyable meal - great food.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013

We used this restaurant to meet-up with friends and had an excellent lunchtime meal in a quiet environment where we could talk easily.
The pub, the menu and the waiters are very old fashioned in a surprising but good way. It seemed very retro but not in any ironic, prissy fashion. I couldn't quite believe how much silver service was used to serve the food.
The food was excellent but I guess not cheap - we all 4 had a main course, a pudding, and a coffee each with a bottle of fizzy water, one glass of wine and a beer between us and with service it came to appr £30 each. The service in the bar and restaurant was excellent and there was clearly a management/owner presence, which I like. We went on a quiet winter's lunchtime and I guess it must be different in the summer, given its location and garden seating, but I would like to return.
Only one moan; I don't like menus where main courses have no veg, it has to be ordered separately and costs far more than it should. We were persuaded to have a selection and, though it was a good mix of 4 and plenty of them, we had no idea at the time of ordering what they cost and didn't.t think to summon back the menu and check.

“Withered”

Oh dear oh dear. What a horrid combination of institutional food and Fawlty Towers service. Avoid unless you have low standards.

“Christmas Party”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2012

It's a difficult thing to write a fair review when you visit a restaurant at his time of year. The alcohol can cloud your judgement .So read on based on that assumption.

The pub has character, nice log fire, plenty of seating and enough headroom in the restaurant if your surname is Baggins. It's an old building so this is to be expected.

There's a reasonable choice of beers and wines and the bar service was pretty quick.

The staff make you feel welcome, we were seated on time and there was a good choice on the Christmas menu. All the courses turned up hot with acceptable timings between them.

The starter of Garlic Mushrooms, main course of Lamb Chops (tender and slightly pink) were good. The Brulee was average.

The service was, let's say "Unique", there must be an agency in Guildford specializing in supplying Latin waiters of a certain age and demeanor. One of my female colleagues was put in an inadvertent headlock as two of them served either side of her.

If Berlusconi finds himself a bit short of cash, I'm sure he'd do well here.

Asking for a tea instead of coffee appeared to be worthy of a horse head in the bed. I thought of asking for mint tea instead..Maybe next time.

I would go back to this restaurant, I'm sure the service is better when there's not so much pressure. The food was pretty good and to use the cliche "A good time was had by all"

“Going back in time - but not in a good way”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 20, 2012

Disappointed. This pub was not what I was expecting. The location and atmosphere inside looked promising but the waiters were something out of a failed 80s restaurant wearing waistcoats and dishing up food silver-service style from stainless steel serving dishes. We had two unexceptional steaks that cost £17.50 each (the cheapest) and that was just for a piece of meet and some fried mushrooms. Side dishes cost more. Desserts (we didn't have any) rocked in at £6 each. How can pubs charge central London prices for average (at best) food? I had hoped, with the rise of the true gastropub, that prawn cocktails and crudites and dips had had their day. The mulled wine was virtually undrinkable (I was desperate) and the diet coke tasted like the cheapest cola. Waiters barely civil.
