We had looked forward to ou visit and I was the only one to get a ropey meal! Not once but on three occasions! The rest of the party were fine.

This is a great place to eat. Fabulous food but book early to avoid disappointment as they get very busy (good sign!) A "must visit" to add to your list.

The family and I went here for lunch today at 1pm and sat in the garden so the children could play in the nearby playground. I was expecting it to be very busy but it wasn't even half full and I have an understanding as to why that is now.
Inside the pub was deadly quiet (pin drop quiet) even with diners already eating their meals, very strange.
The waitress was fine, not overly happy but didn't do anything wrong apart from clear away the menus and in doing so took some of our paperwork with her and then claimed not to have taken it!
Food was a good standard but priced as such. Two roast dinners for us parents and three children's meals. Kids meals were £6 and in the most part a good portion. Two of kids loved the fish and chips, very fresh fish and very tasty. The youngest had tomato pasta which was basic but fresh and not out of a packet however, as with a few places nowadays they try to over engineer the simple dish by killing it with herbs so he didn't eat it and instead fed off the rest of us. Overall though the mains were good. Dessert was a little tricky, having asked how big the brownie was and shown to be quite small we order two, one each for the kids at £6 each as they didn't do child portions of desserts (only a scoop of ice cream). The brownie then turns up in a large portion, both of which couldn't be eaten by the kids even the 11 year old brownie fan. Not knocking the portion but had we been correctly told the size of it we would have only ordered one!
The two desserts for us adults were a mix too. One was fine, Lemon Posset, the other an Apple and Almond Cake which was quite frankly a joke at £6 albeit with a scoop of ice cream. The cake was the size of a malt loaf slice and about 10mm thick. Compared to the other desserts it was tiny, almost child like portion. Then of our kids asked for some fruit so we asked if we could have a few strawberries to go with the scoop of ice cream she was having. When checking the bill we were charged £2.50 for 7 tiny strawberries that fitted into a bowl the size of a roast potato from our main course! This felt a little over the top to price it like that and for the child too, crikey the main course was double that price and they got a piece of fish, chips and peas!
Then the real nail in the coffin was something I found out after we had left and my wife retold what had happened.
When receiving a glass of Pimms, one of the kids grabbed the stirrer. They all then wanted one as kids do, so my wife went to the bar to ask for a couple more. The landlord (i assume) told her that they were not free and he'd had to pay for them so when the kids were finished could we bring them back as his staff have to collect them all in after use, wash them and use again.
Again a pub supposedly kid friendly just too focused on money and not service. Ironically, based on the mains we were talking about how our parents would like it there but after letting themselves down on the small things, like portion size of a dessert, fruit and stirrers for kids I find myself resenting them and not wanting to go back again.
What is it with these Suffolk pubs just not getting it. They are in the middle of nowehere or a small village and need to bring people in from other areas yet they make no effort to make your experience a memorable one. Where is the upbeat service with a smile and enthusiasm that makes you feel special, these pubs need the custom but just don't get that customer service is needed along with good food and drink.
We offer visit pizza express in Bury St Edmunds and The Crown in Stowupland. These places have staff that make the effort with the children and the parents, they're not jumping around all excited but they give you their time, offer help, give good service and consistent quality of food. It's not rocket science but still it happens.
Needless to say, I'm afraid despite the nice food and drink (mains and desserts for a family of 5 and a few drinks), lunch costing £100 with a less than brilliant experience means we will be trying somewhere else next time.
