“Tudor magnificence in Suffolk”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

I spent one night here, on a business trip, so didn't get to explore much.

But a good experience overall! This is certainly a charming place, both Tudor-ish antique splendor and nice modern apparently recently renovated bathrooms, etc. (It's not in "original state", of course; the various furnishings come from various other houses and even royal palaces.) I was in the Seckford Room, very large indeed, with a comfortable four-poster bed, etc. Breakfast was good. It's about as expensive as a run-of-the-mill business hotel in Central London, so not cheap, but a reasonably special experience.

It's quite near the main road, so easy to get to, but one does hear the noise from the grounds; it's not isolated in the country, for better or worse.

Having previously had an excellent dinner at Seckford Hall, we decided to treat ourselves and stay over one weekend.
We booked the "Tudor Room". A large room with antique 4 poster bed and exceptionally large bathroom overlooking the drive. The room was stunning, full of character, clean with a comfy bed and other antique furniture - some of it rumored to have once lived in Buckingham Palace! Tea and coffee facilities in the room were good with an excellent choice and the bottled water was a nice touch. The bathroom was well planned and looked stunning. Double sinks, separate large shower and a free standing bath with clawed feet. A big surprise was found at the end of the bath - a TV discreetly placed on the wall - I thought it was a mirror at first! The toilet is in a separate room. I used the bath and my husband showered although he was a little disappointed with the water pressure.
We ate 3 meals and had afternoon tea during our stay. All our restaurant meals were top quality although the waitress on Saturday night was obviously stressed and was consequently a little unprofessional in the way she spoke/shouted to other staff.
Our biggest complaint was with the afternoon tea. I love this quaint custom and have enjoyed it many different times in varied places. My expectations were high based on the quality of the meals we had previously enjoyed. However it was a total disappointment. Lacking in quality, content and imagination the cream left a nasty after taste, the scones were very cold and still wet in places implying they hadn't been defrosted properly, the fairy cake was the sort you make for a 5 year olds birthday party and the ginger cake was hard and heavy.
The hotel has a pool and jacuzzi but it is very small and we decided as it was so cold outside and we would have to walk across the drive that it wasn't worth it.
To summarize, the building is beautiful and the restaurant meals are excellent. It was very relaxing and the area has a lot to offer.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building are large and full of character but the modern rooms/suites are more luxu...

Dear User Mel51e
Many thanks for your comments from your recent stay with us at Seckford Hall Hotel in our lovely four poster Tudor room.
I am sorry that you did not enjoy your afternoon tea - we are currently in the process of updating this and in the future will have a larger selection for you to choose from. We hope you will notice the difference next time you come in the warmer weather, so you can also make the most of our leisure facilities.

Spent an enjoyable afternoon having full afternoon tea in the lounge of this wonderful Elizabethan hotel. The food was plentiful without being too much. The choice of tea was a little limited and was tea bags not leaf tea. It would also have been nice to have papers available to read. There are spacious grounds and plenty of countryside around if you like to walk

Dear user FoxtrotFilly
Thank you for your recent review of our afternoon tea here at Seckford Hall Hotel - I am pleased that you enjoyed your selection of cakes, scones and sandwiches.
We are currently in the process of sourcing new leaf teas to accompany our food and welcome your comments in relation to providing papers available for our guests during the afternoon.
When the weather eventually changes, we will be serving tea in the gardens either seated or on picnic blankets overlooking the lake - hope to see you in the summer!
Kind regards
Mark

We were recommended to stay at this hotel by my father, who has stayed many times over the years.
Our room was well appointed and comfortable. The gym was ok and the pool was good apart from some of the tiling being a little tired.
No bar service before 7pm on a Friday is unsatisfactory - drinks only available if you cajoled staff from the kitchen. Bar staff (when arrived) unknowledgeable. A couple ordered two dry sherries - "Dry sherry? Croft OK?" and were given two glasses of Croft Original!
There is one standard menu sheet served throughout the hotel - restaurant, bar, garden, room service etc etc - this would get very boring after staying for more than one night. We ordered tiger prawns as a starter for £9.50 each - I doubt that these were authentic "tiger prawns", and when asking for a bread roll we were charged 50p!!! Utterly outrageous.
We will not be staying again until changes are made.

We stayed at Seckford hall to escape the chaos of London and have a relaxing break over Easter. We were not disappointed the room was spacious, lovely view and parking was easy. The Pool, “Sauna” & Spa was limited with a small indoor pool and a communal Jacuzzi. My girlfriend really enjoyed her treatment but don’t book this expecting a relaxing Spa weekend its very limited. We went out to dinner at The Galley which was a £5 cab & drove to Aldeburgh which was hassle free so location was great.

Room Tip: Ask for Margaret Thatcher Room ...

Thank you for your review of your stay with us over the Easter weekend - I am pleased that you had a relaxing break.
The Thatcher room is a beautiful dual aspect room overlooking the lake to one vista and the beautiful walled garden on another - this room is incredibly popular particularly in the summer with its balcony.
We do have other rooms and suites which have large jacuzzi baths - be sure to request one the next you spend time away from London.
Kind regards
Mark

Overall we got what we expected and were very happy.

Accommodation: stayed in a Courtyard apartment. We were advised it was dated but clean. bathroom was new. We were very happy with what we found.

Food: straightforward well prepared and presented. Good variety. It was slightly over-priced.

Service: excellent throughout. Great attitude, helpful, enthusiastic and very patient with kids.

Facilities: pool excellent. Gym was average with limited machines and no tv or music. No weight machines.

Summary: a hotel in clear transition. New owners obviously trying to up the quality of experience with a hotel that appears to have lacked significant investment for many years. Still some way to go and struggles at times to justify premium pricing.

We would return and recommend to friends.

Dear user Talisker1987
Thank you for your review of the Hotel and for your encouraging comments - our first round of plans for redevelopment of this beautiful property are currently with the local planning department - once approved, we will be commencing a major investment in the property as you mention in your comments. We will be starting with the ground floor of the House then moving onto the Leisure area and Courtyard bedrooms,
I do hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel upon completion of these works

Beautiful location and buildings but staff a little thin on the ground was an irritation as we and other guests had to seek out staff to be served at the bar. Our suite was spacious but a little dated and cobwebs on a lampshade did not impress. Walk in shower as requested and was excellent. TV's a little too small for the rooms which overall did not reflect our 4 star expectations or the £154 per night bill.

Room Tip: If you have any sort of mobility issues stay in the courtyard

Thank you for your comments after your recent stay - I am sorry that your bar service was delayed and have spoken at length to the food and beverage team in relation to this.
I agree with your comments in relation to the TV sizes in the room that you occupied - unfortunately the hotel is in a lengthy contract for these televisions which I am keen to withdraw from to increase the size of these sets.
Your tip for guests in relation to the courtyard rooms is great particularly in relation to the room that you occupied with the walk in shower
Best wishes
