“Lovely hotel!”
Reviewed February 1, 2009

Just stayed at the Bedford Lodge on a Winter special deal.
The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable.
The food in the restaurant was fantastic, with silver service. The cosy lounge had a lovely log fire which was nice on such a cold weekend.
We made use of the pool and spa, which was clean and looked after.
We would definately recommend this hotel if you enjoy good food and nice surroundings.

I always stay at the Bedford Lodge when I'm going to Newmarket races. I'm a keen race fan so I stay here a lot.

I really hope the hotel owners are reading this because they have a little gem of a property but they need to take notice of a few points that would improve it and get a 5th star.

First of all, the location is superb, opposite the Warren Hill and 200 yards away from the oval canter ground where the horse's are taken to canter before blasting up the hill, its quite a sight first thing in the morning and shouldn't be missed. Don't be put off by the Newmarket "work riders" who can be (usually are) incredibly rude and hung up on their own self importance, they need to remember that the town thrives on its racing heritage as a tourist centre and being rude and abusive to those watching the gallops is way out of order. Godolphin Stable especially please take note.

Anyway, rant over and back to the hotel.

Aside from the location, it has a first class gym (the pool was closed in July) with free weights and cardio machines. Excellent all round.

The restaurant is also top class, fine food, good wine list, difficult to fault, you'll often see the Channel 4 racing team in here. The breakfast is good, not a buffet and well prepared.

The rooms are excellent and very nicely furnished in a bit of light airy modern style that works well, they are perfectly clean and quite roomy too.

I couldn't fault the service either in the restaurant or the reception.

So its down to those little gripes I'm afraid; firstly, the plumbing needs looking at. Several times now I've been caught out by lack of hot water in the shower. Also, the drinking water from the cold taps can be a bit cloudy. They need an overhaul of the plumbing.

Finally, why the silly bar prices for things like coffee and orange squash etc? These little sundry items make little money for the hotel but annoy the heck out of the patrons. I paid £4.80 for an Orange and Lemonade! Why annoy a regular patron who is going to pay £400-£500 for a 3 night stay by ripping him off for a soft drink? Its so counter-productive, you have a good product, don't spoil it for goodness sake.

Apart from the above issues I can't really fault the Bedford Lodge, its a very good hotel and I've stayed at 5 star places that are not in the same class but please, hotel owner's - if you're reading, get the plumbing sorted and stop those silly rip-off's.

An attractive much extended Georgian house. On arrival we were allocated a room (110 ) with no view and adjacent to two extract units. Quickly changed when requested.
The hotel was predominately full of business people with a few more local people having a drink on the terrace.
Friendly service at dinner by , you guessed it , a Polish team! Food was rather fussy but sound fresh ingredients used. Wine markups were what you would expect from a 4* hotel with some price incongruities. Good bed and general appointments with an excellent shower.
Breakfast was the usual buffet...perfectably acceptable although the apple juice had been around for too long.
Check out was smooth and swift.
My only real criticism would be if, at breakfast time, you have a dictatorial Basil Faulty type sign at the restaurant entrance saying 'Please wait here to be seated' they should make sure someone is around to do the seating! We couldn't wait!
We'd stay again as the internet best rate is good value.

Hotel is basically ok. Its clean, good location, quiet. The breakfast was excellent. The leisure club was nice too.

The hotel was let down by its night service. We arrived at about 11pm, to find the front desk unmanned. We went to the bar, where the bar man directed us to another bar. At this bar we came across 4 staff members. One of these went to find the receptionist. no apology was given for the 10 minute wait we had at check out.

In addition, my personal details were clearly on display on the front desk, including my home address. This kind of security lapse is not acceptable particularly for a 4 star hotel. Had it not been for this problem i would have given the hotel 3 out of 5, however only 2 can be justified due to the potentially serious nature of leaving my details on full display at an unmanned desk.

Best hotel in Newmarket.
Walking distance from town centre. Helpfull staff. Restraunt waitress especially good.
The pool was closed but the hotel e mailed to inform me before my stay and had made alternative arrangments for guests.
Not expensive for what you got.
Food was good although I didnt quite 'get' what the chef was aiming for with my chicken main course.

What a fantastic hotel ,very clean, very modern in a great setting.
My partner and I had a two day break here for my other halfs birthday. We certainly were"nt disappointed, our room was beautiful and spotless, the staff were very helpful and efficient. We know Newmarket quite well and decide to eat in the town which is only a ten minute walk away but the hotel menu was what you would expect from this standard of hotel.
The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and hot food cooked to order with excellent service. The hotel does have leisure fascilities but we did"nt take advantage of them so I am unable to comment.

We stayed here for one night recently to celebrate my Mum's 60th birthday, a group of 7 of us, including one 2 year old. The hotel has something of a peculiar style about it - the reception area and the rooms are very contempary and styled, whereas the bar area and restaurant have a more classic, homely feel - but it all seems to work.

We didn't have dinner in the main restaurant as the have a policy of no children after 7pm, but ate in the bar instead. as bar menu's go, it was a pretty extensive one, and the food was of a very high standard. Breakfast the following morning was equally as good, with a choice of cooked options as we as a cold buffet.

Overall, we had a very comfortable and pleasant stay, and this was in no small part due to the very friendly and helpful staff throughout the hotel. We were made to feel very welcome, and wouldn't hesitate to return.

  • Liked — The excellent staff, a real asset to the hotel
  • Disliked — When there is no racing going on, there isn't that much to do in Newmarket
