“Great food and service!”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

My husband are brand new to the area and both agree this is our favorite spot in Newmarket. The portions are huge and the food comes out pretty quick. Have to say service is the best I've had in all of UK. Our server checked on us a few times throughout our meal and made sure we were never thirsty. One we left, she put my coat on for me...what a sweet gesture you don't really see these days! Highly recommend coming here!

Great food (with very good veggie choices) reasonably priced and friendly efficient service. Wish could visit again but live in Yorkshire!

“so so”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Pre-booked a table for 4 people on a Friday night to celebrate someone's birthday in my party. We were a bit surprised when, on arrival, we were not asked for our name and no reference was made to our booking, we were just shown immediately to a table as though we had just walked in off the street. The table was cramped with very little elbow room and we all felt a bit squashed in. We felt we needn't have taken the trouble to book.

The food, however, was excellent, albeit a replica of what used to be served at Sangdao in Saffron Walden several years ago (where the setting and seating was much nicer!). We do wonder if it will still be the same menu in another few years time - a common mistake a lot of Asian restaurants make - it does become boring and we do stop going.

Despite the lovely food, a "wine" situation did somewhat leave a bad taste (pardon the pun). When we were first shown to our table we were asked quite quickly if we would like drinks, as is usual, and we chose a wine to be drinking from the outset, pointing out that we would be wanting a further bottle of the same a bit later. The wine was quite some time coming and in fact two members of my party who were drinking something else to start with, before going on to the wine, had their drinks served long before the wine came. We were waiting to drink the birthday toast so we prompted the waitress, only to be told they were trying to find an ice bucket! Our first bottle finally arrived, in an ice bucket, and it was lovely - we had chosen well.

When, half-way through our meal and our glasses were getting low, we asked for the second bottle, again there was some little wait, before being told they had already sold the last bottle of our chosen wine. They offered us alternatives, all more expensive, and nothing like the same grape/region etc. - they clearly don't know their wines! We looked at the wine list again and found another which was more in line with what we were already drinking, but again more expensive, so we suggested that perhaps they might want to let us have this for the same price as our chosen first bottle. We eat out a lot, in this country and abroad, at all types of restaurants - and whether Michelin star, a-la-carte, fine dining, pubs, high street chains, Indian, Chinese, other Thai restaurants, they all, without exception, would offer to do this. But not Sangdao! They refused to budge on this and seemed slow to understand that you shouldn't really be topping up wine glasses with something completely different, and the waitress even went away and got somebody more senior to come over, only to reiterate what she had said. Other tables were starting to look and listen so we reluctantly agreed to pay the higher price for something similar to what we were already drinking. To be honest, when it came it was not very chilled but we didn't want to appear to be making any more fuss by mentioning it.

We did wonder if we might be offered coffee on the house or liqueurs, or just some little good will gesture, again as would happen in every other restaurant we know, but it was not to be at Sangdao. I thought about leaving a lower tip, or not leaving one at all, to reflect the wine increase but decided that would have been childish, because up until that point the service had been ok and the food delicious, so they did get a decent tip.

We will, however, tell our family and friends about our experience and we will think twice about returning to Sangdao. What a shame.

“Very Impressed”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

We have used this restaurant many times in the past.
We recently went on a Sunday evening to find it was "all you can eat" for £15 per head. Unlike most other "all you can eat" which are buffets of barely warm dishes sitting under heat lamps, this food was freshly prepared to order. There is no doubt that restaurants offering "all you can eat" can learn a lot from Sangado Thai. We were very impressed.

“Lovely thai food”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We ate here for the first time on Mother's Day. Although it was a buffet, you ordered as much as you wanted from the menu. The dishes were all to a high quality. If there were any dishes not eaten they charge you £2 a dish. ... We ate all ours, lovely food. The white wine was good too. Nice friendly staff.
