I stayed here for two nights midweek whilst on business and stayed in the 'Tochay' Room. It was clean and pleasantly decorated with nice touches such as monogramed bath robes and towels.
The restaurant really does try to provide high quality food and drink, unfortunately I was on my own.
Breakfast was really very good, I loved the Stornoway Black Pudding! but must admit the service was painfully slow.

The hotel is located at the top of this fabulous village, I explored Trinity Church and had an enjoyable run through waymarked paths and fields. A great run that was dry under foot and nicely undulating.
I recommend this hotel and will return.

Stayed just one night here on their Sunday night offer. Wish it was longer! Stayed in Bolrolo room which was a beautiful double aspect room. Ate in restaurant, food tasty and well presented as was the breakfast. Lovely quiet beer garden for a glass of wine in the sunshine and a gorgeous dog called Melford. Fantastic!

My husband and I have just returned home from a three night stay at the Black Lion Hotel and we were very impressed with the service and the warm homely comforts. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is the best we have ever tasted!! Their black pudding is simply a melt in the mouth treat and so is the salmon. Both are specially brought down from Stornaway, Scotland on an over night plane. Long Melford itself is a lovely area with nearby places to visit such as Kentwell Hall, Melford Hall, The historic Lavenham and Sudbury. Fully recommend a stay here!

You only get one first impression and a threadbare doormat worried us. We went for just a Sunday night on their special offer which was good value. Anyway, the ambience and welcome on arrival made up for the doormat and we were escorted to the Barolo room (all rooms are named after wines I think) which is top floor with dual aspect, separate bath and shower; altogether very nice. Apart from the lampshades being dusty the place was clean and comfortable and tastefully done. Not your modern minimalist décor here. Shabby-Chic is more the order of the day and that suits us fine. Comfortable bed, albeit high off the ground, and despite the heat we slept well.

Anyway, back downstairs for dinner on Sunday night was a pleasant experience. A drink in the bar was taken on leather seats and old tables. In fact the whole ambience is soft, mellow, old-fashioned and has patina. (The function room at the back seemed totally different bright and neat, but we were just looking). You feel that a lot of people have been here and the atmosphere is good. If you want crisp modern minimalist look elsewhere but for us it was great. The food was even better; truly good by our standards.

The location is also good. Short walk to Melford Hall (National Trust) and to the remarkable church. The start of the High St is also not far but the other end is quite a hike. They don't call it Long Melford for nothing.

On leaving they screwed up our bill but we got that sorted and left happy.

No it is not perfect but first impressions were wrong and we would come back.

Room Tip: Top floor, and of the Barolo

We needed to find somewhere for a cup of tea and cake as Melford Hall wasn't open until the afternoon with our 9 month old son. We spotted the Black Lion across the road, looked quite posh from the outside and we wondered whether it was ok to bring our son in (as the previous week we were not allowed in the front door of another hotel in St Ives). We popped our heads round the door and they welcomed us in no problem at all. We just had tea and home made cookies while the lovely staff went offered to get some hot water to warm up our sons meal. As we still had a bit of time we decided to have lunch too, the quality of the food was excellent and the choice was very good on the menu even though it was a Sunday. It was pricier than your normal fayre but it was lovely treat in a relaxed atmosphere with top class customer service.

The Black Lion has an unusual decor; the restaurant, bar and communal areas are very tasteful ad feel opulent. The bedrooms are all unique and depending on your tastes not all might be to yours. I once stayed in a bright fuchsia pink room (pink from carpet to ceiling!) and being a man in my 30s on business I felt a little out of my comfort zone. I would recommend picking your room if you can as there are some fantastic ones too.

The food is also fantastic; dinner was delicious and breakfast was one of the best I have ever had. The staff are also fantastic, always friendly and happy to help.

Stayed here as attending a wedding in Alpheton. The room was compact as had an extra bed in for our 4 year old but was well appointed and clean. The staff were really friendly and helpful and paid particular attention to our son which he loved. Breakfast was fantastic and the staff really looked after us for the entire stay. Woul highly recommend and if we are ever down that way again we would stay again.
