You only get one first impression and a threadbare doormat worried us. We went for just a Sunday night on their special offer which was good value. Anyway, the ambience and welcome on arrival made up for the doormat and we were escorted to the Barolo room (all rooms are named after wines I think) which is top floor with dual aspect, separate bath and shower; altogether very nice. Apart from the lampshades being dusty the place was clean and comfortable and tastefully done. Not your modern minimalist décor here. Shabby-Chic is more the order of the day and that suits us fine. Comfortable bed, albeit high off the ground, and despite the heat we slept well.

Anyway, back downstairs for dinner on Sunday night was a pleasant experience. A drink in the bar was taken on leather seats and old tables. In fact the whole ambience is soft, mellow, old-fashioned and has patina. (The function room at the back seemed totally different bright and neat, but we were just looking). You feel that a lot of people have been here and the atmosphere is good. If you want crisp modern minimalist look elsewhere but for us it was great. The food was even better; truly good by our standards.

The location is also good. Short walk to Melford Hall (National Trust) and to the remarkable church. The start of the High St is also not far but the other end is quite a hike. They don't call it Long Melford for nothing.

On leaving they screwed up our bill but we got that sorted and left happy.

No it is not perfect but first impressions were wrong and we would come back.

Room Tip: Top floor, and of the Barolo

We needed to find somewhere for a cup of tea and cake as Melford Hall wasn't open until the afternoon with our 9 month old son. We spotted the Black Lion across the road, looked quite posh from the outside and we wondered whether it was ok to bring our son in (as the previous week we were not allowed in the front door of another hotel in St Ives). We popped our heads round the door and they welcomed us in no problem at all. We just had tea and home made cookies while the lovely staff went offered to get some hot water to warm up our sons meal. As we still had a bit of time we decided to have lunch too, the quality of the food was excellent and the choice was very good on the menu even though it was a Sunday. It was pricier than your normal fayre but it was lovely treat in a relaxed atmosphere with top class customer service.

The Black Lion has an unusual decor; the restaurant, bar and communal areas are very tasteful ad feel opulent. The bedrooms are all unique and depending on your tastes not all might be to yours. I once stayed in a bright fuchsia pink room (pink from carpet to ceiling!) and being a man in my 30s on business I felt a little out of my comfort zone. I would recommend picking your room if you can as there are some fantastic ones too.

The food is also fantastic; dinner was delicious and breakfast was one of the best I have ever had. The staff are also fantastic, always friendly and happy to help.

Stayed here as attending a wedding in Alpheton. The room was compact as had an extra bed in for our 4 year old but was well appointed and clean. The staff were really friendly and helpful and paid particular attention to our son which he loved. Breakfast was fantastic and the staff really looked after us for the entire stay. Woul highly recommend and if we are ever down that way again we would stay again.

While a short visit in Suffolk with small dog in tow, we were recommended this hotel as the sister hotel I tried to book was full. What a result!!
Charming pub/restaurant/hotel. We were made so welcome by the friendly staff and the dog received even more attention!! The room was lovely (but rather hot) and the foodin the restaurant was superb!! As was the breakfast ih the morning.
Wewill definitely stay there again, as it was so good and the village was just beautiful with lots to see and do… Dont miss the church next door!!

We held our wedding here on 6th July and are so glad we chose the Black Lion for our special day! We had sole occupancy of the hotel which made it feel really personal and comfortable. Michael, Nicky and the rest of the staff were first class, so professional, helpful and always there with a smile! The day went so well, no hiccups at all, the food was excellent, the accommodation lovely, and there were plenty of comfy areas - including the pretty garden as we were so lucky with glorious sunshine! - for our guests to make themselves at home and enjoy the day. We know the staff worked really hard behind the scenes on our behalf and having the ceremony and wedding breakfast, followed by the evening reception, all in one venue certainly made it all much simpler for us - we had a really wonderful day. Michael was very good at keeping the bride to be calm, bringing up refreshments while the 'girls' were getting ready, a lovely touch! We've had several comments from friends and relatives saying what a fabulous place it was for a wedding, plus 2 letters from friends saying it was one of the nicest weddings they had ever been to! So a big thank you to everyone at the Black Lion, we really recommend the hotel for a wedding venue, you won't be disappointed!

The hotel staff are friendly and welcoming. The hotel itself is charming with a quirky selection of rocking horses scattered throughout the public areas and a lovely walled garden. We stopped in the Sancerre suite for two nights. It is has a lovely bedroom with kingsize half tester bed and a separate lounge area with sofa, an extra tv and a CD player. The bathroom has an excellent over bath shower, lovely huge fluffy towels and waffle bath robes. The bedroom has windows on two sides overlooking the village green. The bed was very comfortable, though high off the floor and has sheets / blankets rather than a duvet. Breakfasts are completely made to order - no buffet, and are very good indeed.
Some small niggles - restaurant food pricey with more attention to style than taste/quality the night we ate there. Higher quality coffee / tea facilities in the room would have been a treat that matched the rest of the experience.
Overall though, well worth a visit to this lovely and individual hotel in a great setting close to village, Kentwell Hall and Melford House.
