Check in was handled with a smile and a genuinely warm welcome. First impressions are good - the public areas are beautiful and very inkeeping with the period of the building and it's clear that that the hotel has been renovated with great style. Lovely bar area with tables and chairs on a small terrace overlooking the green. Our room, Pommery, was on the top floor (there isn't a lift) and again the approach up the stairs is welcoming and decorated with panache - antique rocking horses and inkeeping art on the walls. The room was lovely - not huge but spacious enough and well thought through. Nice small touches like the well chosen antique furniture, art and very smart soft furnishings. Two comfortable contemporary leather chairs, a workable desk, very nice waffle dressing gowns, tea and coffee and complimentary bottled water. A very well thought through lighting scheme contollable from the bed. The bathroom was smart and large, with a powerful shower, nice decor and everything scrupulously clean -excellent housekeeping. It was a warm weekend and a large and powerful fan was provided in the absence of aircon. Windows were open and the room was nicely cool. The TV was very old, with only the 5 network channels - forget CNN or movies. No fridge, mini bar or roomservice and this would be my criticism - at £175 a night, this is London pricing in Suffolk without expected extra services. Free wifi, which was so slow as to be unusable. No option to have breakfast in bed which is a shame as the breakfast in the dining room was truly exceptional, with locally sourced produce, fantastic service, brilliant coffee and massive two course menu with fresh juices. Overall, a very pleasant two night stay with friends attending a wedding. But the price was high and in my view, unjustified. Lovely surroundings, beautiful decor, a highly respected restaurant, but at this price level I would expect a minibar, roomservice and cable TV on a flatscreen - but these are small niggles in comparison with excellent service and a fab location in a stylish boutique hotel.
